May 21, 201311 yr Author Yep, I've seen him do that but kept it quiet. Cat is out of the bag now... Will mlb do anything?
May 21, 201311 yr I watched that live, but didn't see him spit on the ball. At the time, I thought "What the hell is he doing? He's not dumb enough to spit on the ball -- he must be kissing it for some stupid reason." Although, even that would be questionable. After all, they're now permitted to lick their fingers while on the mound as long as they wipe them off (like that can't be faked.) Maybe he is that dumb.
May 21, 201311 yr Author good deadspin article on the subject: http://deadspin.com/alex-sanabia-spit-on-the-ball-that-doesnt-mean-he-thr-509030293
May 21, 201311 yr good deadspin article lol The volume and apparent viscosity of the the spittle in tandem with the vague hints of effort originating in the nasal cavity all suggest that this is not mere saliva but rather something far more sinister summoned from deep within Mr. Sanabia's cheating lungs. Oh come on. They ain't neva heard of a loogie before?
May 21, 201311 yr good deadspin article on the subject: http://deadspin.com/alex-sanabia-spit-on-the-ball-that-doesnt-mean-he-thr-509030293 Dumbspin apparently can't be bothered to actually read the rules. You know, the MLB rules readily available on-line -- the rules they linked to. In their article, they state that MLB rules say: 8.02 The pitcher shall not — (a) (1) Bring his pitching hand in contact with his mouth or lips while in the 18 foot circle surrounding the pitching rubber. (2) expectorate on the ball, either hand or his glove; (emphasis theirs) But, what the MLB rules actually say is this: 8.02 The pitcher shall not— (a) (1) While in the 18-foot circle surrounding the pitcher’s plate, touch the ball after touching his mouth or lips, or touch his mouth or lips while he is in contact with the pitcher’s plate. The pitcher must clearly wipe the fingers of his pitching hand dry before touching the ball or the pitcher’s plate. (2) expectorate on the ball, either hand or his glove; http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/downloads/y2013/official_baseball_rules.pdf Why did they even mention (or publish) their incorrect version of 8.02(a)(1)? Never mind emphasize it? Their point was that he spit on the ball, which is against both the old and current 8.02(a)(2) rule. Nothing to do with touching the ball after touching his mouth without wiping his hand (current rule) or merely touching his mouth on the mound (old rule.) Oh, well. Dumbspin is about as good on rules as they are on financials.
May 21, 201311 yr He basically digests the ball before each pitch, it's pretty disgusting to watch actually.
May 22, 201311 yr Funny is that Joe West didnt see it when supposedly focused like a laser on it all night. Sounds about right.
May 22, 201311 yr Ignoring the deadspin article, who gave that asshat in the CBS article a job or a degree? That is the most biased rant of an article filled with run on sentences and non-concluding paragraphs I've ever seen for a 'professional' writer. That is what I expect from deadspin.
May 23, 201311 yr Funny is that Joe West didnt see it when supposedly focused like a laser on it all night. Sounds about right. Supposedly, West did see the spitting and threw that ball out of the game, although that's disputed. http://www.miamiherald.com/2013/05/22/3409541/miami-marlins-pitcher-alex-sanabias.html Apparently, MLB doesn't much care about rule 8.02(a)(2) "Thou shalt not spit on the ball (or anything else.)" Nothing I've read says anything about Sanabia even being so much as warned about it. One ball (or possibly more) got tossed out of the game before being used, but that's it. So far.
