The Texas Rangers on Wednesday signed Scott Cousins to a minor-league contract, with a twist.

Cousins, 29, has appeared in 135 major-league games with Miami and the Los Angeles Angels, with starts at all the outfield positions. He was released from a minor-league contract by Boston on April 2.

Cousins the outfielder is no more. He will join the extended-spring-training team in Surprise, Ariz., to start the conversion to left-handed pitcher. Cousins has never pitched in a professional game.

Cousins is best-known for a play in 2011 in which he injured San Francisco catcher Buster Posey with a hard slide. That play triggered a push to lessen home-plate collisions. That was mandated by a rules change before this season.
