The good thing is that the bulk of the money is paid within five years.  They will have plenty of money to sign their young core in five years.   The contract structure is good.  I just don't see how Hosmer helps put them over the top.

I dont think this is actually that bad depending on the structure.  This probably isnt the guy i would have signed, but the money doesnt matter as much considering this deal is apparently front loaded because of just how many guys they have in their system that will be team controlled throughout the entire contract.  I like Hosmer in that ballpark though.  Wonder what they do with Wil Myers who was their 1b last year.  I think the move makes sense from the previous point i made, but i think i would have waited till next offseason after they get some of their prospects some major league seasoning this upcoming year.  They are still another year or 2 away.
