December 17, 200322 yr Isn't a third of 25 8 1/3? Count the 8. Ivan Rodriguez Ugueth Urbina Juan Encarnacion Derrek Lee Mark Redman Andy Fox (wasn't on WS roster) Todd Hollandsworth Rick Helling I miss any?
December 17, 200322 yr I think it's safe to say that Williamson is much better than this Neu kid. And yet, Neu is $3 Million cheaper. Swapping Big Red for Scott doesn't increase or decrease payroll. We're trying to decrease.
December 17, 200322 yr Yeah, the extra 1/3 And you also have to remember that more than 25 people played for the Marlins last year.
December 17, 200322 yr Yeah, the extra 1/3 lol, I meant did I forget any players we've lost and yes, you are right more people did play for the team.
December 17, 200322 yr Isn't a third of 25 8 1/3? Count the 8. Ivan Rodriguez Ugueth Urbina Juan Encarnacion Derrek Lee Mark Redman Andy Fox (wasn't on WS roster) Todd Hollandsworth Rick Helling I miss any? Just a lil defense here: Pudge left on his own. Ugy we let go. Juan was dealt, but wasn't going to be signed anyways. Lee was outright deal. Redman (SEE: Encarnacion) Fox left on his own Hollandsworth left on his own Helling left on his own So basically, 4 out of those 8 left on their own. The problem I have is when people say we've lose 1/3 of the roster, implying 98 all over again (maybe that wasn't your exact goal, but it is what comes to mind) when in reality it is no where near close. And Vlad would prove that.
December 17, 200322 yr Pudge, Lee, Encarnacion, Redman, Urbina, Hollandsworth. Could consider Fox (wasn't on the WS team), Looper (rumored to be nontendered) or Helling (not with the club long.) The average turnover for contending MLB teams is about a quarter to third of the previous year's team. I'm not crying 1998, but I have reservations about this trade. Who knows if the Williamson-for-Redman rumors were true, and just that just Redman for just Williamson. But this is what happens when a club is under such financial restrictions that players like Encarnacion and Redman end up having zero trade value after countless articles discussing their possible release. Neu is a servicable reliever, but I can not but think if the club might have been able to get an even better reliever and an outfield prospect (who's going to play left and right if Conine and Lowell are gone next year?!!) if we had shopped our worst starter last year, Carl Pavano, who is wanted because of a good two week run in the playoffs.
December 17, 200322 yr I'm not saying that the FO isn't trying. I'm just saying that when some people see that 1/3 of our team is gone from last year, some people say it is a firesale. They're wrong, but they will say it, and that's why the FO needs to do something positive like pick up a good Free Agent.
December 18, 200322 yr I think it's safe to say that Williamson is much better than this Neu kid. And yet, Neu is $3 Million cheaper. Swapping Big Red for Scott doesn't increase or decrease payroll. We're trying to decrease. we have two objectives: 1) get payroll to $60 million 2) improve the bullpen swapping red for neu saves us $3million... our payroll is currently less than $50 million. you figure at some point we have to purchase relievers. don't you think a $2 million williamson is worth it in the red trade? the act of decreasing payroll can only go so far. dumping redman's salary was totally unnecessary, and settling for neu in the process was not exactly what we needed to do considering that our projected payroll is now below $50 million. that's why i'm a little miffed about this trade. if it's for vlad money, then i understand why we're dropping below $50M. if it's for bullpen money, then i'm a little baffled why they wouldn't get a better RP in return for red. if it's for cutting final payroll to well below $60 million, then i'll be really annoyed. again, i think i'll wait and hope this was for the best.
