AJ in 2004

But if I had to predict, I would probably go with Fish4WildCard's numbers.

They're solid and still realistic for a pitcher of AJ's caliber coming off TJ surgery.

well...9-6

thats 15 decisions...

that means that he would prob. be in the rotation for a while...

I think the whole pen/rotation situation will depend on how well the fish are doing.

If the Marlins are struggling, then they would probably try out AJ as a starter around June/July if his arm is good to go. If the Marlins are playing good ball, it might be in their best interest to keep him in the pen a little bit longer and maybe save him for the postseason.

true...true...

In that case I think that hes gonna stay in the pen- :) In that case, I hope so too :mischief2 well..it looks like were gonna be a good team...so he will prob. stay in the pen. Which would be fine with me.

If the team's playing good, no use in rushing him. If it ain't broke, dont fix it.

Considering the Fish are playing good and they make the playoffs, it would good for AJ to get enough time on the mound in the regular season to the point where he is used to pitching and comfortable enough, so he can help us out big in the postseason. That rotation could be a knockout punch right there in the postseason :mischief2 .

.225 OPP avg.

He's going to have a 4.00 ERA with a .225 average against? Are you ok? It is one or the other.

well...we could put him in the rotation sometimes...but I dont think I want him pitching so much if we dont need him...

yeah

But he will probably get a few starts in there (especially to test his endurance) or if another starter gets injured...(god forbid!)

Having Tejera ruin the first 7 innings or having Tejera ruin the last couple innings...

I say bring a few guys in to ST and let them compete for the job.

you cant realistically compare a starter's numbers to a relievers.

I just did. realism in your world and the real world are two different things.

relievers can have higher ERAs and low opponents BA because they dont face as many batters and often leave the game with runners on base etc....

starters have more opportunities to get out of their own messes and retire more batters, thus allowign for a lower ERA.

wake up.

Josh, relievers can give up more runs if they walk people and hit people, or people reach on errors. Like Das said, starters have to get out of their own jams. A .225 would be a 3 ERA or under.

thats where he should go...

yupp

Tejera as a starter = :nono and if hes in the bullpen he could just eat up some innings when were already out of the game in cases where the starter did bad...

When Matt Morris came back from TJ surgery (and I think Morris/Burnett is a fair comparison), he went 3-3 with a 3.57 ERA, but only in 53.0 innings. If we don't re-sign Redman or bring in El Duque or some other person to be our 5th pitcher, AJ is going to see a lot more work than most pitchers coming of Thommy John surgery, and that worries me. I think if he's going to a starter, he'll post a sub 4 ERA and he'll probably find a way to win around 10 games, but I'm more worried about his numbers the next year and down the road, AJ can only hurt himself more by overworking himself next year. If we're hanging our season on a guy who is out for at least the first 2 months of the year (perhaps more if he needs extra rehab time in the minors) we're in a lot of trouble. We have to look at AJ more like a great pick-up at the trade deadline than anything else. He cannot be factored into our plans, in my opinion, because he is just too big of a question mark.

instead of the obviouse #s most people would toss out there, my expectations for AJ is very simple 135 innings. got it?

I like that philosophy.

the most important thing is not having setbacks and getting use to pitching every few days.just instead of going 7-8-9 innings like he did in the past now he will be a 5-6 inning pitcher. and thats not bad...
