? NEW YORK -- Javy Lopez is on the verge of becoming the latest addition to the Baltimore Orioles ' rebuilding program.

The free-agent catcher and Baltimore were close to agreement Sunday night on a three-year deal worth about $23 million. The team hopes to finalize the deal Monday.

"We've had ongoing discussions with Baltimore since the winter meetings," Lopez's agent, Chuck Berry said. "They've been productive. They're hopeful of working out an agreement in the near future."

Baltimore already has added shortstop Miguel Tejada. The 2002 AL MVP agreed Dec. 14 to a $72 million, six-year contract.

"It's very close, but it's not completely done yet," Orioles spokesman Bill Stetka said. "We would hope to have an announcement in the morning."

Baltimore also has been speaking with the agents of two other prominent free agents: catcher Ivan Rodriguez and outfielder Vladimir Guerrero.

Lopez, 33, hit .328 last season for the Atlanta with 43 homers and 109 RBI, both career highs. It was his best year since 1998, when he hit .284 with 34 homers and 106 RBI.

But the cost-cutting Braves decided not to re-sign him and didn't offer salary arbitration Dec. 7, meaning he couldn't re-sign with them until May 1.

Baltimore has finished fourth in the AL East for six straight seasons behind the New York Yankees, Boston and Toronto.

Well scratch one player off our potential FA targets...

Pudge is gonna have to take a lot less than he expected to get. The market just got worse for him. I don't know where he'll sign.

Pudge will be a Dodger a couple of days after this officially occurs.

f*** him!

If he wants to live 3,000 miles from his statue and his family, I hope he knocks himself out.

The dodgers don't like Lo Duca that much and he can play first too. But they've been looking to deal him so i guess LA is a viable option.

The Dodgers will be in total control on this one. Fudge has no more opportunities. Look for a great reduction over his 4 yr/$40M expectation. :w00t

and paul lo duca? Marlin? :mischief2

If Pudge is a Dodger, probably. That would be a very, very nice Christmas gift.

I'll give a former Marlin on LA a standing O, but he ain't Pudge!

I'm disappointed but frankly if Javy is going to be signed for three years its best for him to be in the American league where he can DH, play a little 1B and be productive throughout the contract's term. I wouldn't want to see him after three more years behind the plate in the NL.

I wish him luck. He's a h*lluva good player.

How will we get Lo Duca here? Grab him, thow him in a van, blindfold him, and take him on Loria's private jet to Miami International. :thumbup
