This all makes sense to me. What happened this one night with my friend and I. He ordered one drink, he kept the tab open expecting to order again but for whatever reason our stay was shortened and he didn't order another and he asked for the check, and left a dollar tip. I never saw the total so I can't remember what it was.

We left and I guess the bartender, a woman, made a comment to a fellow patron about the dollar tip after we left. The patron came out as we were getting to our car and he started yelling at us calling us cheap and whatever curse words. I was confused as hell, I was like is he yelling at us? Then he said "I hope you have a daughter who works as a bartender so someone can tip her a dollar and you can see how that feels." Then I put two and two together and was like oh crap don't tell me you tipped a dollar. Realizing that wasn't exactly cool we just ignored the guy and drove off but he was bitching at us the whole time. 

Now, in hindsight, was a dollar tip a little lame? Probably. But was it actually wrong if the bill was small? Maybe us keeping a tab open and staying a bit made them assume a bigger tip was coming but I know for sure nobody waited on us in any way so that's also part of it. One drink, zero service after that.

Tips are nice but they gotta be a bonus. If you have to rely on it to survive then something is wrong I think.

That's bullshit. This dude wanted to get laid or something, and the bartender likely knew it.

I don't think your friend did anything wrong. Like you mentioned before, you aren't obligated to tip. He tipped the "customary" percentage and she felt entitled to more? You guys are nice because I probably would've blown up at that simp.

And what does "so she knows how it feels to be tipped one dollar" even mean? Is that some triggering experience akin to harassment or a noose or something? Some things should actually make someone feel bad, other things make people pretend to feel bad.

it really depends on what you do for a living. Nobody in their right mind would take a job as a waiter making $2hr and say "oh well, i'm good making this any tips would be a bonus".  Outside of those types of jobs though where you are making an actual living or at least minimum wage then yeah, you shouldn't be expecting tips plus a normal wage.  I think this is what you meant? 

 

 

I caved today for pickup and gave a $4.53 tip to round it up to an even $50.  sigh.
