AOL News: Murder Capital of the U.S. good, new york used to be close to 2000...iu thought bloomberg would come with an insane increase of crime, and though the grafitti came back, it isn't like pre-giulliani times.

LA is also much, much bigger than chicago though it sports fewer murders. large cities with high per capita murder rates include st. louis, though apparently their murder rate plummeted this past year. in case you guys were wondering, the murder capital of the united states is gary, indiana. per capita, no locale in the entire country even comes close to the incredibly high murder rate there. gary is no random shanty town, either. it's just a couple miles down the shore from its neighbor chicago... :shifty is there some sort of murder link?

We come home after a hard day's work, and there's some guy that cuts us off, or some girlfriend that's always nagging us, or some White Sox fan that's being his naturally annoying self, well you can't blame US for deciding that a stabbing is called for. Not guns, Daley won't let us have those. But we get creative in our own way. Seriously, Washington is more screwed up than us. Not to mention that LA is a lot more spread out - Chicago has much more of an "urban" area. NY? NY is like Nazi Germany, you can't even smoke there anymore. You're gonna be safe in a police state, but at what cost? AT WHAT COST, I ASK YOU!!!!!!!!
January 5, 200422 yr I'm not surprised. The city is trying to improve the many poor neighborhoods in the west and south sides, but the bad neighborhoods still WAY outnumber the good ones on the south and especially west sides. The north side of town is a lot better, but even it has it's fare share of crime. Oh and don't link ANYTHING in northwest Indiana, like the city of Gary, to Chicago. The reason Northwest Indiana is so bad is that basically chicago puts all it's garbage there (ie steel mills, sewage, etc) and if you ever have driven through there and just SMELLED the air, you know what I mean.

I agree with everything you said, except that LA isn't much bigger than Chicago actually. But New York is, and your point is well taken. The per capita murder rate here in the Chicago area is horrendous and must be fixed, and oh read my last post to see why there isn't a murder link between Gary and Chicago.

January 6, 200422 yr what's capita? per capita crime is basically how many crimes occur per people living in the metro area studied. For example, the per capita murder rate in chicago is much higher than in new york because although they had almost the exact same amount of murders, there is a significantly higher population in new york city than there is in chicago.
January 6, 200422 yr Illinois should try a law like we have that is 10-20-Life 10 years if a gun is present during a violent crime. 20 years if a gun is fired during a violent crime. 25 years to life if a gun is fired and a person injured during a violent crime. Violent crime = felony
January 6, 200422 yr imo, a mandatory 20 years for firing a gun in the air during a robbery is a bit harsh, but i'll save that for another thread.
January 6, 200422 yr C-Bus finished with 112 for 2003 and it's been a major deal around here. It's the first time our murder rate has went up in 5 years. Personally, I don't think 112 out of 750,000+ is that bad, but maybe that's just me. Columbus is becoming a major city. We've even got our own sniper now!
