Posted January 9, 200421 yr I used a point system to rank the catchers, and i will do this for every position 1. Javy Lopez 190 (1) 2. Mike Piazza 182 (2) 3. Jorge Posada 177 (1) 4. Ivan Rodriguez 168 (3) 5. Jason Varitek 1.65 (2) 6. Jason Kendall 162 (4) 7. Mike Lieberthal 162 (5) 8. AJ Pierzynski 161 (3) 9. Greg Myers 160 (4) 10. Charles Johnson 154 (6) 11. Ramon Hernandez 151 (5) 12. Chad Moeller 149 (7) 13. Benito Santiago 148 (8) 14. Jason LaRue 147 (9) 15. Benjie Molina 133 (6)
January 9, 200421 yr Next season, you probably have to go with Posada. His obp has now been regularly at least .100 better than his average and he will have protection in the lineup. However, Javy and Camden can get along very well.
January 9, 200421 yr Could you post your formula so we can see what variables were considered? :teach
January 10, 200421 yr i love rankings with no explanation behind how they are generated. They're points you idiot!!! Points!!!!!!
January 10, 200421 yr since i'm a math geek, i looked at the numbers and i'm 100% positive i know how they were generated. the player's OPS for 2003 was added to the player's career OPS to fulfill the 50-50 weighting. so for pudge, it would be 84.3 + 83.2 = 167.5 (rounded to 168) it's completely based on hitting, which might be appropriate to rank some positions, but it doesn't quite work for catchers. it'll also rank guys with short careers higher than they ought to be ranked.
January 10, 200421 yr Author how Piazza, and Posada, and even Pudge arent ahead of Lopez I dont get because of Lopez great season. In 2003 he had far and away the best year. However, it probably is a fluke and he will drop back down next year.
January 10, 200421 yr Author Could you post your formula so we can see what variables were considered? :teach it's based on 2003 OPS + career OPS. So for instance, Lopez is: 1.065+ .839 or 106.5 + 83.9 so that comes out to 190.4, rounding off to 190. Also, to make it a little bit edged to 2003, I did this based on the top 15 players with 200 or more at bats in 2003 in terms of OPS.
January 10, 200421 yr u cant just add ops, u gotta AVERAGE it in.. like look at jim edmonds, he had like a 850 ops against lefties with only like 150 ab, but had 1050 ops against righties and his ops was still over 1000. alkazoid u still havent learned that ops is not everything dood?
January 10, 200421 yr OPS+ is a better stat since it corrects for park differences. Using OPS+: 1. Posada 269 2. Piazza 264 3. Javy 250 4. Pudge 247 5. Lieberthal 235 6. Pierzynski 220 7. Varitek 214 7. Greg Myers 214 9. Santiago 203 10. Kendall 198 11. Ramon Hernandez 182 12. Jason LaRue 177 13. CJ 168 14. Ben Molina 160 I left off Moeller since he hasn't had enough ABs in my opinion. This still isn't a very good list, but it's much better than OPS.
