1. Are these handicapped numbers or just where the money is? If the latter, then is anyone surprised the Cubs are 4 to 1? Cubs fans are loyal. Surprise, surprise.
2. I still think that if the Marlins present an attractive deal, Burnett may be hard-pressed to say no. It's a risk both ways. If he rejects a fair deal, then he has to bank on (1) remaining healthy and (2) having a great year. This is a huge gamble in Burnett's case since neither of these two have really come together for him in the past. If he gets injured this year, or has a bad year, he will be in no position to demand big dollars on the free market. He would likely have to settle for less than what the Marlins would offer now. Pavano hit the jackpot with his performance last year. Every free agent would love to have their best year be their contract year. But it doesn't always work out that way. For now, Burnett is saying what he should in order to position himself in the best possible place as he goes into his contract year.
3. I'll just echo those who ask why the Cubs aren't on this list.
4. The only thing this tells us is that you can add.
5. We got tickets in section 447 (behind the home plate, upper deck) for $60 each through Ticketmaster. I was one of the favored few who got through online. The guy next to us said he had bought his tickets from a ticket broker for $200 each. Also, I kind of kept up with the prices on e-bay. Around $200 seemed to be the going rate for "cheap" seats.
6. No matter how great the off-season, the reality is that Len will have a national audience when the game broadcasts are on WGN, plus a fan-base that is solid and committed. As a broadcaster, it was an offer he coudln't refuse. I think all reasonable people recognize this.
7. I know I'm going to seem like an anal-retentive jerk, but I'm willing to risk it. . . . Could you please change the title of this thread to: Should HAVE kept Penny ... ? I don't know when and where people started substituting "should of" for "should've" but this particular grammar mistake borders on the illiterate and I've seen it more often than I'd like to count. So, if just one person reads this and stops using "should of" for "should've," then I'm glad to carry the label "anal retentive jerk."
8. I don't blame Pavano. He has to make a career-earning out of this one good year and one FA shot. The comparison to Pudge seems a little off to me.
9. Realistically, I don't see how Kasper can say "No" to the Cubs if they ask. WGN is a national audience. The only way he would stay here is if he were totally devoid of ambition, and I don't think he would be where he is if that were true. As for whether or not he is "good," that depends on what you like in a play-by-play guy. If you liked Chip Caray, you'll like Len Kasper. He's pretty much from the same mold.
10. My feeling is: If you don't vote, you better damn well be in full-scale rebellion, weapon-in-hand. Anything in between is unconscionable.
11. Vote. I don't care who you vote for, you need to vote. Many people have died to secure our current form of government and you shame yourself and them if you don't vote. 606357 :notworthy
12. Since each state gets only 1 vote, the concern is that states with split delegations would abstain.
13. Cool story. I never trusted a man who couldn't hold his whiskey. Down a shot. Win a Series. Do we have a new formula?
14. but if we keep following in the steps we are going in now America will no longer be. We will end up like, Egypt, Rome and Babylonia. A shadow of what greatness we could have been. 603764 Well of course American will eventually "be no longer." All great civilizations eventually die. Even exalted Athens is no more.
15. Has any one taken time to actually watch the show? Please post your thoughts. 576667 You'd like my "thoughts" on Jack Van Impe? Hmm...it's not really the sort of thing that's meant to appeal to our cerebral selves.
16. Gallup has been real weird this election season. All of the polling has been weird this year. I think the results will show that the end of polling as we've known it is past. Whatever happens, Im nervous as hell. 605565 My sentiments exactly.
17. Too volatile to tell. Personally, my gut is in a constant state of dismay. If I make it through Tuesday without dying or killing someone, it will be a small miracle.
18. Man, the Cubs are coming apart at the seams ... can't say that I'm unhappy about that.
19. Yeah, I read that and it seems rather ambiguous on the whole matter, like it might have been either way.
20. This may have been posted before, but does anyone know if Stone left of his own accord or was he pushed out?
21. The latest news is that the supposed postal employees who were supposed to handle absentee ballots separate from the normal mail were: (1) Never trained and (2) never assigned. I don't know how much of this blame (if any) I'd want to place at Brenda Snipes' door when she was relying on the post office to do what it said it would do. However, therein lies the rub. I guess it's too much in Broward to suppose anyone does what they are supposed to do. In retrospect, I'm certain she wishes she had made herself a royal nag in following up with the post office.
22. Since the Sox drowned their curse with money, I look for the Cubs to get every FA they can. One thing about Pedro: Jim Bowden said this morning that Pedro wanted to go to the National League (where pitch counts are lower -- we all know what happens when his count gets over 100) and where it was warm. The 3 teams mentioned were Padres, Dodgers, and Marlins. Too bad we don't have the sort of money other teams do.
