Jeter is the second best offensive shortstop in the AL, possibly the second to third best offensively in the majors, so to say he "isn't that good" is not only idiotic, but completely ridiculous. Because OBP is by far the more important factor in the combination. Jeter had a .393 OBP. Nomar had a .345 obp after his statistics were heavily inflated by Fenway, because his obp outside of fenway was .286. Jeter's was .411. That is a difference of .125 in obp away! However, you obviously just watch espn and not know the stats. Tejada is definitely not better than jeter. I hate tejada, his obp is .336! Two other great shortstops, Renteria and Rodriguez are the only two that could be better. Rodriguez is definitely the best, even though his ops is increased by Arlington. His obp away is .384 and his total obp is .396. Renteria had a .394 obp and his away obp is .374. So in the major leagues, Jeter is the SS with the 3rd best obp total and the 1st best away. So if OPS is so overrated, this should clear up the rest for you. However, the real debate is between whether Jeter or Renteria is better, when defense, ballpark effects, league averages and career numbers are compared. Though Jeter is historically better, at this moment I would give the edge to Renteria. However, a debate can still be made. You never bring any real statistics into this argument, because you cannot make one. You're going by "what you hear", but what you hear is not always true. Tejada in 2002, Nomar pre 2001, Renteria post 2002 are all better than Jeter now in my honest opinion. However, at the present time assessing ops and more importantly obp, Jeter is the second best SS in the AL and third in the majors. When one considers how proven Jeter is compared to Renteria, a debate can be made he's the second best in the majors (though my honest opinion is that renteria is better.) In conclusion, you are wrong and ignorant unless you bring something knowledgable up.
