Posted January 12, 200421 yr How much of the Marlins does Loria own? If he owns a significant amount over majority (75% or higher), how about he sells all but 51-55% of it? He'd get alot of money for it, enough to pay for stuff, and there would be more money in the system to have to throw around for a stadium, significant free agents, etc. Hell, I'd buy .000001%.
January 12, 200421 yr a recent article from the past week or so suggested that maybe he should get in cohoots with don smiley and find the names of all those local investors from smiley's failed bid to buy the team. i think it's worth a shot, at least after his legal troubles get cleared.
January 12, 200421 yr I don't really trust Don Smiley, and Don King is an idiot. How about Mark Cuban? I'm sure having Cuban own like 20% of the team would do wonders. Plus, he's got the right name AND the right personality for this city (even if not the right ethnicity).
January 12, 200421 yr While I like your idea and I think alot of people would like to own a piece of the Marlins MLB is reluctant to do what Huizenga did with the Panthers and the NBA did with the Celtics. Right now, until his case with his previous partners is setled, no one is going to invest until they know what they are buying a piece of.

Oh great, then we'll have the newspapers claiming another owner leaves us....I know he'd still own 20%, but that's how they'd spin it. I don't really see the need for him to sell any part of the Marlins. Hopefully, he's committed to getting a stadium somewhere. What made you think of the idea of him selling most of the team?
January 12, 200421 yr No, he would own majority, not 20%. The point is for him to keep interest but get more money into the club so that the Marlins can put up more for a stadium, maybe sign a real free agent here and there, etc. The idea is purely mine, nothing to it. Just a thought. I was talking to a Card fan and he wondered why the Marlins' didn't have a stadium, and when I got to explaining the situation to him he wanted to know why the Marlins, like the Cards, didn't just pay for their own stadium. Obviously, the Marlins wouldn't pay for all of it, but if he sold some stake in the club he would net the money from the sale of whatever amount he chooses to sell, plus the added worth of the people that buy stakes in the club. It is basically a win-win situation in that Loria keeps control of the team, still makes the calls, has money to work with, and if for some reason he ever decides to stop being majority owner he can just sell off a little bit and have one of the people who would be minority owners just buy it and become majority owner, keeping the team "in the family".
January 12, 200421 yr No, he would own majority, not 20%. Ah, I got ya. I thought you said "sell 55%", not "sell all but 55%". Interesting idea, though.

I doesn't sound like Smiley has anything to contribute.
January 12, 200421 yr Loria need to look west into redskin territory and sell a stake to the Miccosoukee Indians. They have lots more money than they need! :cowboy
