The Orioles announced they signed right-hander Sidney Ponson to a three-year contract on Wednesday, marking the return of one of the team's most popular and sturdy players in the past few years. Ponson, who spent his first 5 1/2 seasons with the Orioles, was traded to the San Francisco Giants for three pitchers in July after rejecting a three-year contract offer. He pitched the final three months for the Giants, including a start in the National League Championship Series against the Marlins, but he was not offered arbitration. Talks intensified this week, and Beattie told reporters Tuesday the deal was close. Ponson, 27, is 58-65 in his career. He went 17-12 combined with a 3.75 ERA for the Orioles and Giants, fulfilling his vast potential. Ponson's first five years with Baltimore were filled with inconsistency, as he often frustrated club officials with a lack of focus. But he harnessed his talent into results in 2003, winning 14 games before being traded. His top two performances occurred just days before being traded. Ponson tossed a seven-hitter at Seattle on July 10 and followed that with 8 2/3 sparkling innings at Yankee Stadium on July 24.

January 16, 200422 yr O's rotation will be: Ponson Ainsworth Eric DuBose Matt Riley Rodrigo Lopez or Omar Daal Ponson is pretty decent, and is still improving. The three middle guys are all young and unproven, but all three of them have the stuff to be #1/#2 starters in the future. It's likely one or two will fail miserably, but 2004 is the final step in rebuiliding for the O's; they find out what they have, and make additions next offseason to go for the playoffs from 2005-09. Rodrigo or Daal just suck up innings as the #5. Not a big name rotation, but it has the potential to be pretty solid. In the AL East, they're a .500 team for this season. But watch out for them in 2005. The O's have a good young core of talent, and Angelos will spend big again next offseason.

Ponson Ainsworth Eric DuBose Matt Riley Rodrigo Lopez or Omar Daal if ya baseball junkie like me..... than u know what most these guys can do.... but even with one the best offense's in the game which the O's will have... look at the divison they play in... there picthing has nothing on the Jays and Yanks..... not to mention one the greatest pitching duo's eva Schill and Pedro if healthy are gonna put up some Stats that every Fantasy player would go nuts ova... O's pitching ranks them #4 in AL EAST Pitching 1. Yanks " im lookin foward to seein Lieber this year" 2. Jays"too much depth" 3. besides Pedro and Schill the rest the rotaion is weak...... 4. O's 5. Rays " they are improving,. but with the cap the way it is its so hard for them to compete with these other 4 teams.....

But add Lowe and Wakefield (I forgot who was number 5) and you could have the best staff in the division. And they are #3?

January 19, 200422 yr Unfortunately, there's almost no way the O's are going to go to the playoffs in '04. If a lot of things go wrong with the Jays, and a lot of things go right with the O's, they could eke out 3rd. But the posters here who say the O's will finish 4th are probably right. Too bad they aren't in the AL Central. Oh, and Lowe, Wakefield and Kim (Boston's 3/4/5) are overrated and nothing special. But Pedro and Schill alone are enough to give them the 2nd best pitching in the division.
