TarHeel324
interesting fact of the day: there only 3 black pitchers in mlb: dtrizzle and oliver, plus sabathia thats it
RippyO
Shawn Chacon? Ray King? LaTroy Hawkins? Luther Hackman? Jerome Williams? Tom Gordon? Dewon Brazelton? Arthur Rhodes? Stephen Randolph? And when you say "black" you would be including players from the Caribbean nations who have African blood. Then it would be a much larger number. BTW, Sabathia was born in the U.S.

BIG Z
cc sabathia is hispanic if i'm correct...
Guest Juanky
C.C. Sabathia is latin. There is a huge difference. You are not black if you are from latin america, you are hispanic (except if you are haitian or brazilian, then you would be latin).
Fish Fry
Are you sure C.C. Sabathia is Hispanic? The guy was born in northern California, and the C.C. stands for Carsten Charles.

I might be confusing him with Danys Baez. Him I'm sure of. Sabathia might be American.

Izzie
I don't even know why this is a thread. Baseball is indeed more of a hispanic sport so who cares, all the black guys went to the NBA if you were wondering where they were.
Guest marlins02
just because baseball is so popular in latin america doesnt make it more of a hispanic sport. this is an american game and it is kinda disturbing that it is lacking so many african americans. its something that MLB needs to really work on. Izzie
I think it's more of an hispanic sport. Most of them are hispanic, absolutely nothing bad about it but it's the fact. America's too busy with their football anyways.
Guest marlins02
football has done a great job marketing and its propelled itself to the top but baseball is still this countries past time. you look at the biggest names in this countries sports history and their are quite of bit of baseball players, the most important records are baseball records. look at the the MLB playoffs after 9/11. football couldnt have done that. look at the amazing buzz this years MLB playoffs created because of the mere possibility of boston playing chicago. baseball might not be the most popular sport anymore but it still has its place in the countries heart. the only way it can become the most popular sport again is by attracting more african americans like football, basketball. g8trz2003
i agree with 02pac that baseball does not have as many black players, and it's a shame. Yay, hispanics are playin in the MLB. But it stems all the way down to Little League. Little League/Babe Ruth/Dixie League/etc. are all dominated by white kids. I know MLB wanted to start trying to promote baseball in the inner cities, but more needs to be done.
CapeFish
The problem is the NBA and NFL displays all this bling bling and the factor of a LeBron type that gets payed before he does anything. Baseball has a totally different values system than the NBA and NFL which is not as attractive to young black kids who are choosing which sport to play. It is a shame, but it is the truth. Instead MLB should be making Little League easier to join. I played Little League and loved it, but then again I love baseball. I have played in organized basketball and football and didn't enjoy it as much as baseball. In the mostly black Dunbar neighborhood of Fort Myers, the Little League has a waiting list because it is so popular.
Izzie
I know and agree that it doesn't have a lot of black players and it's sad but what are we gonna do about it? And I mean it's not like these 3 starting pitchers are the only african american players in the game.
CapeFish
I also think MLB should make ads featuring the Dontrelles, Jps, Wilsons, and other young black players and air them on UPN, BET, and other stations that air programming that is popular to African-Americans like they do with Hispanics on Univision, Telemundo, etc.
g8trz2003
I know and agree that it doesn't have a lot of bl0ac2k pl0ayers and it's sad but what are we gonna do about it? And I mean it's not like these 3 starting pitchers are the only african american players in the game. "but hey what are we gonna do about it" ??????????? You can't go through life going, "yah hey it sucks, but what are we gonna do about it"...no, things can be done. MLB used to be amazingly popular among blacks. And the interesting fact about 3 black pitchers is a decent representation of the rest of MLB. Yah, there are many more blacks playing field positions, but the fact remains: blacks are not playing baseball like they used to. It isn't cool to play baseball....people like Dontrelle Willis will hopefully change that.

What I meant was, it's not like we're the MLB so what are we gonna do? Write them letter saying "hey we want more blacks in the game" ? Guest marlins02
i agree with cape about doing more ads with the african-american players like Jeter, Willis, bonds, pierre and others and also throw in some of the old school players like frank robinson, hank aaron, bob gibson, lou brock and others (not a sosa, not a guerrero, not a colon or escobar) to put on BET. i always watch that channel and i swear ive never seen an MLB ad. CapeFish
I think that MLB has lots of black players, look at the games superstars and you see Bonds is the leader in many people's minds. MLB is going to engage in a big marketing program soon. The biggest things that can help MLB gain a higher standing are, sadly, an NFL & NBA work stoppage.
