Question for Out of State Marlins Fans
Miami native and lived there until I was thirty. I grew up a Red Sox fan ,but switched my allegiance when the Marlins were born. I went to 15-20 games a season until I received a job offer that was to good to refuse and relocated to Savannah six years ago. Was there for all four home games of the '97 series. I'm the lone Marlin fan up here in a sea of Brave followers. Living as an exile, I can't tell ya'll how much I enjoy this site because, it's almost as good as being there.

Organizational players
Matt Treanor / Chris Aguila are two players who were drafted and developed by the organization. It means a little more when kids drafted by your organization make your club and produce. Also they have a little edge over that other player who is from outside from the organization. This kids are about to become the first two position players since CJ to make the team(I believe?). Its been a long time coming, but congrats guys make those who believe in you proud :thumbup 723860 Teal; For what it's worth Treanor actually started out with Kansas City ( 4th round -'94). He spent four years in their system before we picked him up on waivers in '97. However you do make an excellent point, it is nice to see the draft starting to produce major leaguers for the fish. With Hermida, Olsen, Wilson, Kensing, Johnson, etc. getting close, we should have a strong home grown contingent over the next several years.

Marlins make 7 roster moves
Cave seemed decent last season when I saw him in ST. Anybody here have any "scouting" type info as to his potential? 707558 Cave had an excellent 2003 closing for High A Jupiter ,but really struggled when he was offered the opportunity to close in Double A Carolina last year. After the first couple of months last year he dropped back down to Jupiter, where he was adequate. He was placed on the 40 man roster following his outstanding 2003 campaign ,but was dropped from the 40 this year. He will probably be given a second chance at Carolina this year, but his ( and Flannery's ) time is slipping away. Both Resop and Messenger have passed him in terms of short reliever prospects. Baseball America does not rate him among the Fish's top 30 prospects.

Baseball America's Top 30 Marlin's Prospects
3.35 seconds? That can't be right. 701976 Wildcard - BBA wrote about Campusano, " Some believe he is every bit as fast as Double - A outfielder Eris Reed. In fact, some of the Gulf Coast League instructors had the two lined up for a match race in the outfield before a trainer called it off. Campusano has been timed at 3.35 seconds to first on a bunt from the left side. ( He switch hits ) He made 28 errors but showed a 75 arm that could be even better than Class A shortstop Robert Andino's. His arm isn't just strong, but accurate too." It goes on to say that he is considered coachable with a good makeup. He is generally compared to Tony Fernandez or Alfredo Griffin, but he still has a long way to go.

Baseball America's Top 30 Marlin's Prospects
Just received BBA's 2005 prospect guide. The fish ranked 14th overall in terms of overall minor league strength, dropping down from 8th overall last year. According to BBA our greatest depth is in LHP, CF and SS with a solid group of RHP also. The Marlin's chief weakness was a lack of hitters "who work counts and take every at bat seriously". Anyways.....the top 30: (1) Jeremy Hermida, of (2) Scott Olsen, lhp (3) Yorman Bazardo, rhp (4) Jason Stokes, 1b (5) Josh Willingham, C/1b (6) Eric Reed, of (7) Taylor Tankersly, lhp (8) Jason Vargas, lhp (9) Robert Andino, ss (10) Trevor Hutchinson, rhp (11) Josh Johnson, rhp (12) Josh Wilson, ss (13) Luke Hagerty, lhp (14) Randy Messenger, rhp (15) Rick Vandenhurk, rhp (16) Jai Miller, of (17) Greg Burns, of (18) Logan Kensing, rhp (19) Jamar Walton, of (20) Chris Resop, rhp (21) Jon Fulton, 3b/ss (22) Rodrigo Rosario, rhp (23) Jose Campusano, ss (24) Franklyn Gracesqui, lhp (25) Ronald Belizario, rhp (26) Cole Seifrig, 2b (27) Allen Baxter, rhp (28) Chris Aguila, of (29) Lincoln Holdzkom, rhp (30) Jeff Allison, rhp I thought it was interesting that Kensing was only considered the FIFTH best of last years 5 starters at Jupiter and Campusano has past Pierre and Reed as the fastest man in the organization ( 3.35 seconds from home to first on the bunt )

Question About the Draft
The Marlins have the following for the amateur draft: Overall Pick: First Round: 16 - Marlin's choice 22 - Giant's pick as compensation for Benitez 29 - Yankee's pick as compensation for Pavano Supplemental First Round: 34 - Supplemental pick as compensation for Benitez 44 - Supplemental pick as compensation for Pavano Second Round: 67 - Marlin's pick Supplemental Second Round: 82 - Compensation for Redmond The Fish have never had more than one first round selection in their history, much less five ( counting the Supp. first ) and it is an exceptional year for college talent. Keep a couple of position players in mind - Teagarden the catcher out of Texas and Braun the third bagger out of UM

If we do trade Enc...
i dont know if id trade willingham 668460 Don't get me wrong I am a big fan of Willingham's bat, the problem is he has no true position - I think he would have more value to an American League team where he could have quality ABs as a DH and serve as a jack-of-all-trades at OF-C-1B. He could easily accumulates 300-400 ABs per season this way

If we do trade Enc...
Just a thought on a possible trade scenario: To Boston: Juan Encarnacion, Jason Stokes, Josh Willingham To Florida: One of these three ( Hanley Ramirez, Dustin Pedroia, or Luis Soto ) and Lenny Dinardo Boston gains a quality 4th outfielder who could sub for an oft injured Trot Nixon, a quality RH 1B prospect with plus power who can possibly supplant an aging Millar in the next year or two, and an interesting 10th man who could provide quality depth at a number of positions. It doesn't hurt that Epstein is a big proponent of the moneyball approach. Florida gains a quality SS who could succeed Gonzalez in the next year when his contract is up and a quality left handed arm for the bulllpen. The fish also free up the 4.5 mil in contract

If we trade Enc...
(participating in new thread previously and actively well-established) If we get Delgado, we will dump Enc (packaged with Stokes, rather the valued Stokes and not the lesser valued Aguila and Eric Reed.) With Delgado and no Enc we have we have a committee of four (competing) for RF. Aguila, Reed, Conine, Willingham. If we don't get Delgado, I hope we save Cash for a mid-season run. 666350 I agree that we would dump Enc's 4.5 mil, if and only if, Conine is healthy enough to start the season. Of your 4 man platoon I would say this: Aguila lacks the power to be an every day corner outfielder. However, his ability to play any of the three outfield spots offers, coupled with his decent OBP makes him a strong candidate for the fourth OF spot. Reed has gap power, with 80 speed, but doesn't have the arm or sufficent power to play in RF. If he puts up another .300 year at Carolina this year, the Marlins will have to make a call on what to do with him. Willingham is the consummate Moneyball player. Great OPS, but no position. He will never be an everyday catcher and the reports on his defense in the OF are lukewarm at best and at 25-26 he's not likely to improve significantly in the field. That said his bat is too good to keep out the bigs much longer. Moreso, than Stokes I would think we could package Willingham with Enc to an AL moneyball team ( like Boston ) for decent value. There he could provide depth at C,1b,OF or DH. I see Conine with the fish for one last season, Hermidia should solve our RF concerns after that. Just my opinion

Salary links?
Most sites will not update salary information until Pitchers & Catchers report. So you may have to search a little to find what you want. Take a look here: http://dugoutdollars.blogspot.com/2003_09_...rs_archive.html ESPN will also update over the next few weeks. FWIW Pierre has one more year of arbitration before he will be eligible for free agency, so the fish have him for at least two more seasons.

Final Roster Payroll
Wild Card; I was wondering the same thing. Without the deferred money to Hampton and Rodriguez I come up with approximately 53 million. This could fluctuate depending upon performance bonuses and what the Fish decide to award non-arbitration eligible players (i.e. Cabrera, Willis, Bump, etc.) Anyways... Starting Pitchers Burnett 3.65 Mil Beckett 2.4 Mil Leiter 8.0 Mil Willis 400 K Valdez 800 k Bullpen Mota 2.5 Mil Spooney 350K Riedling 750K Alfonseca 1.35 Mil Perisho 475K Jones 425K Bump 350K Position Players Loduca 5 Mil Conine 3 Mil Castillo 4.67 Mill Lowell 6.5 Mil Gonzalez 2.8 Mil Encarnacion 4.45 Mil Cabrera 450k Pierre 2.4 Mil Bench Easley 750K Aguila 300K Treanor 300K W.Delgado 350K Dillon 300K Unless we land Delgado, we should come out of spring training with something like this.
