So who will hit the first grand slam this year?
Interesting that no one picked Cabs. Amazing he has yet to hit one.

Game 2 vs Pirates Thoughts
I still believe we'll soon see Ramirez batting immediately behind Cabrera whether it's 3-4 or 4-5 with Uggla and possibly Jacobs hitting ahead of the duo depending on the lineup, followed by Willingham and Olivo. To me that could lead to a dynamic lineup if De Aza or Amezaga or fillintheblank can lead-off and get on base. Hanley's bat works anywhere in the lineup you put him behind Cabrera and this is a completely different and offensively superior team. I worry that Hanley may try to do too much and overswing if he were in the 3rd spot.

So...are we still calling it a "great" offense?
The bottom of the lineup is a problem, but if we move Uggla in the 6 spot and put Hermida 2nd, it should help, even though Uggla will not see the pitches he is seeing now batting in front of Cabrera. And these last 4 games shows how much Cabrera means to this team: If he's slumping, the whole team seems to go down with him. Outside of his rookie year, I think this is the worst stretch I've ever seen from Miggy. Not just the 0'fer, but the K's as well. I don't know if anyone remembers this, but when Cabrera was 0-15 in one stretch his rookie year, the next game he had 2 homers and 2 doubles. It would be nice to see something like that tomorrow. :mischief

Swept by the Nats
Wait wait wait wait wait. Let' see if these people still want changes after this road trip. 10 games vs the Nats, Pitt, and Tampa should change the the end of the world is near/nay sayers/finger pointers' minds. We are on a record breaking pace for Ks but seems to me we were last year as well at this time and we turned things around. If you take that aggresivness away from them at the plate then the Ks will drop, but so will the rest of the offensive stats. If it ain't broke don't fix it, and right now it's just a little bent. Just remember. :whistle Ahhh yes. And the errors pile up. Very poor defense. Have no idea how you are trying to equate poor fielding to a high amount of Ks, but whatever. it happens baseball is crazy like that it's not like we came into this weekend with a 25-10 record either.. No, but we're better than Washington. I dont think that saying the team is hurting is an excuse, it's the reality of the situation: - Starting Amezega, Borchard, Treanor (although not as a result of injury) makes the bottom of the lineup unspeakably awful. Add to that Jacobs being at about 70% or so and there are only 4 legitimate major league starting players in the lineup. - Cabrera was terrible in this series. As he goes, so goes the offense. His defense also was very shaky. I have no doubt he'll have a big series in Pittsburgh though - This team needs to start off well against the Pirates. Any one know if we might see Hermida out there? Cabs was terrible?? What an understatement. I could care in the least about the Ks but how many unearned runs are attributed directly to him in this series? But wait. That's Miggy. The finger pointers will be leaving him alone. He's allowed to make errors. It's a shame when the best defensive play I can think of in that series was Reggie pulling that homerun ball back onto the field Friday night. I'm not defending Cabrera's errors, but I think they both led to only 1 unearned run.

Pittsburgh
Miggy's gotta get used to teams pitching him away away away and not allow it to frustrate him. Nats did it, and it worked. Thats how every team should pitch him. I thought Cabrera likes outside pitches; he can take them to the opposite field.
-
Pittsburgh
Cabrera getting back into the groove. I missed half of Sat.'s game and obviously all of Sunday's, but it appears with 4 walks in the series that the Nats finally got smart and pitched around him.
-
Managerial Errors (long)
What irritated me most about Friday night's game (even more than the errors) was the inning where Shawn Hill walked 2 of our guys on 8 straight pitches, then Olivo comes up and swings on a breaking ball on the first pitch, and Abercrombie follows him with a 1st-pitch swing as well. Why wasn't Gonzalez sending a signal to Olivo to take pitches until Hill threw a strike?

Game Thoughts
Our local sports coverage is pathetic and incompetent. I just tuned into local Channel 12 sports to catch some highlights, and they didn't show the Cabrera walk-off!

Cab and Hanley in Top 6
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/base...irst/index.html Here are the Marlins' players that made it onto their list. Note: The number in parenthesis is where the player ranked in last year's Top 50 No. 6. Hanley Ramirez, SS, Marlins, Age 23 (NR) As much as I like Reyes, however, I like Ramirez a little bit better. The two shortstops had nearly identical numbers last year and they have nearly identical numbers this year, but Ramirez has two small advantages. First, he's six months younger. Second, he's at least three inches taller, which means that his bat has more projectibility from a power perspective. Reyes and Ramirez are extremely close in value -- you can call them No. 6 and No. 6a if you want. But if Ramirez were in New York and Reyes in Florida, the presumption would be that Hanley is the better player. No. 4. Miguel Cabrera, 3B, Marlins, Age 24 (4) Cabrera invariably gets profiled as Manny Ramirez v2.0, and in terms of his ability to drive in runs, that's pretty fair. PECOTA anticipates that Cabrera will have 932 career RBIs by the time he completes his age-28 season; only 10 players in baseball history are ahead of that pace. But while Manny was always an oaf in the field, Cabrera not only plays third base, but he plays it pretty darn well. He's less exciting than the Sizemores and the Reyeses, but in terms of pure production, Cabrera's the man. Honorable Mention: Dontrelle Willis, P, Marlins, Age 25 (42) There's nothing to worry about. D-Train's ERA is high but his peripheral statistics are right in line with his career averages. He's simply been lapped by a lot of the other young talent coming into the league. Not sure I agree 100% with that Bolded statement. I would say Cabera is a below AVG third baseman. He has a good glove but his speed and quickness leave something to be desired and there is that question of whether or not he has gotten lazier on the field. I agree. Cabs has looked awful at third base this season. He also looks like he ate a house in the offseason. If he could get his weight down perhaps he would be a more mobile third basebman. He can barely bend over to his left to reach for a ball not hit directly in front of him. I don't think he's been awful this year at 3rd. There have been plays he should have made, but he's also made some great diving stops. He's got a great arm; he just needs to be more consistent.

Attendance
A little bit off-topic here, but is anyone else annoyed by how loud everything is during the game? I'm not sure if the rest of major league ballparks are the same. It would be nice to be able to talk about the game between innings, but it's impossible with all the loud music and silly things on the jumbotron (Miccosukkee Air Boat Race, for example). I guess the actual game itself isn't enough and people need to be entertained further. My dad said back in the old days everyone in the stadium would be talking about the game/strategies in between innings. I wish it were like that today, but sadly our attendance would probably be even worse if that were the case. We seem to live in a society where people need to be entertained 24/7.

Is a Petition Possible
I'm pretty sure the Marlins know how the fans feel about keeping Cabrera and Dontrelle. It wouldn't be unreasonable to let go of Dontrelle for the right price at some point, but it'd be blasphemy if the Marlins let Cabrera. I'd have a hard time continuing to support the Marlins if they don't keep Cabrera. I'm with you here. I'd be devastated if they traded Miggy. I know that sounds extreme, but it's true. I look forward so much to his every at-bat.

No game thoughts thread?
Did I actually read in the game thread from someone who blamed Cabrera for that run being scored??? Cabrera had no shot to get that guy at home, whether he bobbled the ball or not. Borchard and Amezaga are the ones to blame in that inning.

Was Omar Minaya Recruiting Miguel Cabrera?!

Anibal Sanchez optioned to AAA
When Anibal has his control, he's very tough. On another note, did Cabrera look like he was in pain today? I know the team trainer says his injury won't get worse; I just hope it can get better, even without taking any days off.

May 2, 2007 - Marlins vs. Mets @ 1:10pm
I'm of the belief that you pitch to the guy who's slumping at the plate, regardless of lefty-righty situation.

May 2, 2007 - Marlins vs. Mets @ 1:10pm
They should have pitched to Delgado. Wright has been showing signs of coming out of his slump.

May 2, 2007 - Marlins vs. Mets @ 1:10pm
Umm, they just intentionally walked Delgado? :confused

12 wins
Just an observation on the game tonight. I've never understood why the shift works so well with certain hitters. Tonight, Delgado came to the plate with 0 out in the 9th inning, his team down by 3. The Marlins employed the shift, and it worked perfectly, as Carlos grounded out to Uggla, who was playing on the grass. Delgado has had a successful offensive career; how hard is it to hit the ball to the opposite field when the defense is giving it to you? Perhaps I'm spoiled watching a guy like Miggy, but is Delgado (and Ortiz, among others) just up there to try to pull the ball and hit a home run? Shouldn't his job be to get on base in those situations? On another note, did anyone catch the Golden Boy being booed? Mets fans are pathetic, but I'm secretly enjoying Wright's slump. :mischief

Hanley Ramirez
Interesting to see a Marlin in this photo. :thumbup

Elias is going to have an absolute field-day with us
Semi related to this thread, I am gonna be so sick to my stomach the day that Dontrelle or Cabs gets traded. So fun to watch. 5 for 5 with an injury? The guy is so sick. I hear ya. And just because I'm on such a high tonight: David Wright has 0 homers. :shifty

Wasted chances
Any news on Cabs? Before tonight's game, I read somewhere that the team trainer said he can't injure himself further by playing, and Fredi mentioned he should be 100% in a week or so. I sure do hope his pain tonight was a temporary thing, and that he hasn't aggravated his oblique.
