15 yd Penalty Added for Excessive Celebration

Featured Replies

The league unanimously decided to charge teams that have a player doing an excessive celebration a 15-yd penalty on the next play. They decided that fines weren't working, due to the increase from 15 fines in 2002 to 48 fines in 2003.

i personally don't care about celebrations, but if the league cares, they should do this, these guys don't care about 15,000 dollar fines, they're multi-millionares

GOOD!

About time the NFL did something about this.

On top of that I'd fine those jerkoffs One Games Paycheck and make him pay the fine to a charity of the leagues choice.

Plus the 15 yard penalty

That way those a$$holes play the game like its meant to be played.

I can't believe this.

One perk of being in the NFL over college is that you can celebrate freely. Now you can't anymore? Whats left except selling out?

To those who think celebrations are not how the game is supposed to be played, I don't agree at all. I despise all things that block the game from being played. I hate the warnings in baseball to each dugout because pitchers can't pitch inside and because bean balls and hitbatsmen were the way we were shown the game, and not being able to play the game how it is supposed to be played is part of the reason why baseball has been weaker in the past years. Celebrations, like bean balls in baseball and fights in hockey, are intricate parts of the game. It is how the game works, it is essential to the game. It helps build and strengthen rivalries. People got ticked off when T.O. danced on the star in Dallas. I loved it, because it caused everyone on both sides to circle the next time on the calendar they would play because the bad blood was there and they would play their hardest the next time they'd play. There is a reason we love watching Yankees-Red Sox, Heat-Knicks, and rivarlies such as these. Because things happen to build and strengthen rivalries. Celebrations attack the other team, causing them to play harder so they can be the ones celebrating, and therefore lifting the level of play in the game.

And I love celebrations because the players are so damn creative. When a new celebration happens what is the thing everyone starts talking about after the games are done? The creative celebrations. The 100 yards of field is the place for strategy, let the 10 yards of endzone be the grounds for creativity.

This penalty needs to go away.

so im guessing no more lambeau leap

like Phlub said, It's about time

I'm ok with a little TD dance and all that, but too much of the "scoring aspect" is being taken over by excessive celebration...Good move by the NFL

YES! YES! YES!

Finally! I'm so tired of football being treated like it's a game or a sporting event! This is important business, we can't be ruining it by letting these guys celebrate. If they want to play with emotion, they should go somewhere else, this is football!

Speaking of which, the PGA REALLY needs to do something about Tiger Woods' fist-pump, it has no place in the game, he should be penalized with strokes.

Celebrations have no business in sports.

spat while i was laughing my ass off. i guess laughing has no room in sports.

I personally think the NFL should fine their fans for excessive partying. Those guys with no shirts in below freezing temperatures? That should be a 15,000 dollar fine and cause their season tickets to be revoked. Guys wearing cheese on their heads should be actually fried and put on hamburgers and various other food items. Also, all Raider fans should be shipped to Iraq with their spiked baseball bats and shoulder pads to help fight the war on terror as punishment for their over the top, non-stop antics.

I don't have a probloem with new rule.Is actually geting out hand now with the excessive celebration.

NFL is not WWE .....

Actually the Packers were notified by the NFL that the Lambeau Leap is still OK because it creates fan interaction and not just self centered activity.

But even if the Lambeau Leap was gone, I wouldn't miss it all that much, its become so common they don't even show it on TV all the time.

No, it isn't ok. It might be ok to a Packer fan, but if you are going to get rid of some of celebrations get rid of them all or not at all. None of this special treatment bulls*** just because Brett Favre spells his name funny.

I don't really care for the Lambeau Leap all that much, but the NFL said to Green Bay that it's still OK to interact with the fans.

Like I said I wouldn't miss it all that much.

And also other teams can jump in the stands.

The NFL considers interacting with the fans to be a good thing.

How is celebrating in any other way not interacting with the fans? The fans clearly enjoy it, and you want alienate them? Smart call.

Oh btw, the Yankees have about 14 more bling blings in their trophy cases.

Well said.

so lemme get this straight. 15,000 wont get them to stop but oh 15 yards will

I can't believe this.

unfortunately, the NFL markets the shield (i believe warren sapp said this once) they dont want to market players, they want to market the shield. and sadly, thats what makes the league so sucessfull and what gives them so much money. thats why they dont let them take off their helmets on the field.the NFL is greedy but hey, its all about buisness right? :confused
