Merrillville schools ban pink clothes

MERRILLVILLE, Ind. -- Officials have banned pink clothing for the remainder of the school year out of concerns that the color has become associated with gang activity.

Administrators last week told students at the city's high school and two middle schools to avoid wearing pink clothing or accessories, said Michael Berta, associate superintendent in the Northwestern Indiana district.

"There is no evidence of gang activity. But because of the growing use of the color pink we decided to be proactive. Girls and boys are supposed to avoid wearing pink," Berta said Monday.

None of the district's 6,500 students have been disciplined for wearing pink, he said.

Berta said the issue came up at a recent administrator's meeting when a principal remarked that there were more students wearing pink. "Not only were there more kids wearing pink T-shirts and pink hats, but also pink shoelaces, which was unusual," he said.

Clothing retailers said pink is a popular color in current styles.

"About 30 percent of my items for this season are pink. It's 'in.' I have pink in every shade," said Amanda Zipko, owner of Amanda Gayle's boutique in Schererville.

IMO, it's a stupid rule. If you guys don't know who made the color pink so hot this year is because Cam'ron from The Dipset started wearing pink.

His newest punchline "I roll threw a bunch of citys Alabama,Tampa Tampa, damn I'm so gangsta I got pink banned in Indiana." :lol

i still dont see how pink is in. i hate it the way kids these days wear these long pink shirts all the way down to the floor. i mean, do they think its cool that when someone sees you they suddenly think your a guy in a dress?!?!?! i dont see how its "in". society will slap some reality into this "in" thing when they realize they need to dress appropriately if you, say, go to a job interview. wearing pink hats and pink shirts and pink shoe laces. wtf is that man. its gay if you ask me.

i just think pink is gay. pink has always been a color associated with females. i didnt make it that way, its just the way it always has been. and i find it gay that guys wear pink. if you look at homosexuals, they wear pink. another reason why i think its gay. but then again, thats just IMO.

Actually, one of the toughest guys I knew owned a pink shirt. Best part would be when someone hated on it or insinuated he's gay. He was good at making said person look like a big ass (by saying "comfortable men can weak pink you faggot" or, my favorite, threatening to fight them and then laughing at them when they backed down). Best part was usually after the fact when he'd rant about how pink's a color and homophobes should just stay home and blow their own brains out.

a manly man doesn't mind wearing pink. however, pink is a color that doesn't look good on anyone. Pink and yellow are terrible on clothing. Orange is like that too.

That's foolish. All Cincinnati Bengals look good in orange. Hell, all Cincinnati fans look good in their orange jerseys (in fact, I wear my orange Peter Warrick jersey three times more than my OTHER three Bengals jerseys combined).

Don't hate, appreciate.
