Is NHL a dead league?

Featured Replies

yeah, the NHL is in much better shape than the NBA. i always see kids wearing throwback NHL jerseys and talking about the sick move rick nash made last night against calgary. and the coverage of the NHL and the ratings are incredible

in other words, the NBA might just be in a little better shape than the NHL :cool

I don't think he was talking about the financial state of the NBA.

He was probably talking about the fact that 95% of NBA games are boring drivel that consist of grown men in shorts missing 65% of all their jump shots and then hitting the occassional dunk to make the kidz forget about the fact that they have no actual fundamentals.

I follow both sports and they are both declining. The NFL will soon start a decline as well because they're getting to a state where the players are always in trouble and fans become disgusted with all the choking caused by the teams not being able to get the piece to win.

Baseball has turned the corner and will soon start growing.

what the NBA needs desperately is a real minor league system to at least show these kids how to play.(the high schoolers are here to stay).

The NFL is not in a decline nor is it going to decline. players in all sports get in trouble. baseball might be on its way back and maybe even catch up to the NFL, but the NFL aint falling. s*** aint happening, its to strong. also in all sports, there are teams that cant get the final peice to put together a championship team, what does that have to do with anything?

every sports has it's ups and downs over the years like baseball. the 90's were the downs the 00's will be the ups, the '30's were the downs in baseball because of the great depression. like capefish said football will start to decline someday, i hope. it's like the stock market it always has ups and downs that last for a long period.

I think this idea would give the NHL a good jumpstart back into popularity.

Noone likes how the regular season last FOREVER so this is what I say.

Play 40 regular season games From October to the end up January. Have the same point system. At the end of the regular season a 32 team playoff would then start up a 32 team playoff similar to NCAA Hoops. Have four brackets 1 vs 8 seed. Everyone loves the NHL playoffs because they are so exciting. This would probably add to the fun of it. Also this would be a very marketable time because it would be inbetween the Super Bowl and March Madness. I think people would pay a lot more attention to hockey, and it would be fun to see too.

That would mean 16 teams a year would have at most 24 home dates. How are they supposed to make enough to cover their expenses?

There has been talk to scaling back to 70 games, which would mean less back-to-backs and better hockey. But, you'd lose 6 home dates, so salaries would have to deflate as such.

hockey's just never going to do well on TV...

i go to plenty of Panther games at the ODC, & generally even with a bad team this year they did pretty well in attendance.

the players seem completely opposed to a salary cap, but something needs to be done. maybe a luxury tax would make the owners start controlling themselves a little... (fat chance)

I mean 9 million for Bobby Holik?

5 million for Marty freaking LaPointe???

The salaries have been on the downward trend of late and some players said they'd accept a luxury tax. And the days of spending the Yankee salary money on hockey players is over. The owners simply don't have the money to spend on a product in many place on the decline...

Additionally, the only team capable of doing it at the moment anyway is the Red Wings...

sorry hockey fans, the NHL is beyond dead

were gonna see a bunch of players bolt to europe during the work stoppage, several teams will be gone, and besides, were in the dead puck era. scoring has been down in recent years (cuz goalie pads are too huge) and America is just indifferent towards the league

well never see the NHL be a popular league in America

I hate this goalie pads are too big argument...

Let me geuss, you think Luongo's are too big? Or how about Marty Broduer's? Goalies are the most athletic players on the team now. That is no secret and is the reason why goals have been down. Come on, give me something more tangible then that like depleted talent levels...

Oh yeah, the NHL was preatty damn well popular in the early 90's and is a big hit in the northern states. I thought baseball was beyond dead too in the early 90's with the strike. The death would've occured if there was a labor stoppage during the 2001 season...
