Space Shuttle Columbia Lost

Featured Replies

The chances of this being terrorism is about .000000000000000000000000000000000001%

It would have taken years of planning.

Years of plotting.

Years of working to get in on the inside.

From what I understand security is tighter in the Space Program than with Air Force One.

This will most likely be determined as mechanical failure of some sort, either something with the wing or something with the heat shield.

Its a tragedy, but it is in no way tied to the situation with Iraq, which is a whole other can of worms.

A sad day indeed. My heart goes out to the families of the 7 on board, as well as the entire 'family' that supports them.

While so many see the space program as a waste of time and money, the technologies developed as a result have greatly improved many of our daily lives.

God Bless.......

They said that they lost control because a pieace of tile from the wing broke off when the shuttle was lauching....Just like that year the same thing happned! they said "oh dont worry it is nothing big" and then when they came back BOOM they had no control of the shuttle...

They should be fired or if not go back to shuttle school or something....

Not exactly.

A piece of a type of foam fell off and impacted part of the shuttle during the launch. A team of engineers looked at the video over and over again to see if they could determine if any problems existed. After reviewing all the evidence they had at the time, they determined that they did not believe there was a problem. At this time, they are not sure that it did lead to the disaster of today. They may not know for weeks, months, or ever.

The same type of foam from the external fuel tank was discharged on an earlier shuttle mission. It did some damage to one of the retrievable solid rocket boosters.

Again, these guys are already highly trained. They looked at all the evidence available to them from the launch. In their expert opinions, it was okay.

Lets wait and see before jumping to conclusions.

later....

At first, I thought they were doing some kind of tribute to Challenger.

What a tragedy.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends of the Astronauts.

I dont mean to be rude but that was kind of funny.

whats funny about a tribute to that tragic event?

it sounded funny because it sounds as if the columbia tragedy was some kind of play.

You have a very twisted sense of humor (if it can be called that)

later.....much!

Hey lowell...you think you are the shiznit don't you?

How about you go and read up on the Space Program and learn what happened to the Challenger...

You can't tell me you know much since you weren't BORN yet...so go read some more history before you make some stupid comments...

You are from Costa Rican and Cuban descent aren't you, then you'll understand this... No le desees mal a nadie...What would have happened if one of your family members were on that ship (either Challenger or Columbia)? Come on man..be more mature....

I'm requesting the rest of the mods to reconsider his ban. I don't think this is what we need...

I would like to offer my deepest sympathies to these fellow Americans. And to that fine Israeli gentlemen.

It is truly in the space program where the great dreams and visions of America can be reached.

As Americans we will bounce back from this like we always do. It will be with a renewed vigor and strength, but bounce back we will.

America lost some fine young men and women yesterday, we must mourn them and remember them, but we must carry on with their memories and their dreams as our focus and carry on as they would want us to.

I think its pretty clear she meant she couldnt believe what she was seeing since it is such a rare event and the Challenger disaster ocurred 17 years ago this week. Have you heard the expression "Quit while youre ahead?" Well, Id quit while youre only a little behind.

At first, I thought they were doing some kind of tribute to Challenger.

That wasn't funny...people lost families...

NASA Memo on Wing Damage

Back to topic, and an update. The insulation foam from the external fuel tank was believed to have cause a damaged area roughly 7" by 30" on the left wing. While it was thought not to be a safety concern, it is now the main focus of the investigation.
