Borland called up

Featured Replies

Gracesqui had a tough indoctrination into the bigs. I expect we'll see him back again sometime.

Good move though. Borland has been strong this year and could be the 8th inning guy we've been looking for.

If Borland is the 8th inning guy "we've been looking for" we are in serious trouble

I dont mind Borland. he's a good AAA reliever and good to call-up in case of an injury or whatever but nothing else ... he's not a guy I would rely on for a long period of time.

he's the only one with a little bit of experience so i'd take him in a heartbeat.

Where's Ricky Bones when you need him? :lol It looks like Toby has been dominating triple-A so far. If Matt Perisho, whose career ERA is something like 7.00, can be a reliable set-up guy, why can't Toby?

And what makes Perisho a reliable set-up guy? ... is it because he has done fairly decent in 2 apperances? ... :confused

I mean ...

OK, reliable lefty specialist, decent set-up guy. Same thing.

To be on the active roster, Gracesqui had to already be on the 40-man roster. Borland wasn't on it. By placing AJ on the 60-day DL -- it allows them to add an extra man to the 40 man roster without taking AJ off it.

As for why not move Fox, he hasn't been on the DL that long and his return date is still up in the air so putting him on the 60-day DL could be a bad idea. (This is a guess)

It was reported yesterday that the most optimistic date for Fox to return would be in two months, with 3-4 months more likely. Anyway you slice it, AJ will be coming back first.

I'm sure there must be a logical reason for all this....and I'm just missing it. I heard two months, but not 3 to 4. Where did you get this information?

Perisho has only shown promise as a lefty specialist.

Borland has been successful in the closer role in AAA, so right now he is our best chance.

I would agree we would be better off looking for a trade to get that 8th inning guy. We need one desperately as Fox may not even be back this year.

Let's face it, we don't have a bullpen.

Wayne is getting rocked, he is not a 8th inning guy. I hope he pitch on the 7th or below. Sadly, but I think the best option is Perisho/Bump for setup at this time :banghead

Bump does not have the intestinal fortitude to handle pressure situations. He looks like a deer in the headlights when the going gets tough. His 5.75 ERA indicates he is best suited for games that are out of hand.

Righties are hitting .364 against Perisho, lefties, .000. So Perisho is only valuable as a lefty specialist.

Right now, Wayne is the best option we have.....and we saw how that can go last night.

Borland to the rescue..... :(

GOOD! We needed an extra righty in the pen.

Even if Borland is near awful that means he'll do better than Perisho has done against righties. This also allows Bump to be used in situations he is better suited for. And gives Wayne a day to rest every now and again.

I'm sure there must be a logical reason for all this....and I'm just missing it. I heard two months, but not 3 to 4. Where did you get this information? From the Marlins website:

Fox being cautious: Reliever Chad Fox feels that in a best-case scenario, he could be back in two and a half months. The right-hander, who has been on the disabled list since April 29 with inflammation in his elbow, isn't ready to deal with the alternative.

The 33-year-old knows that if he undergoes another operation on his elbow, his career is likely finished.

Fox, who has battled back from two Tommy John surgeries and a reconstructive surgery, makes weekly calls to Dr. James Andrews to update his progress.

After seeing improvement thus far this week, Fox said, he will ask the orthopedic surgeon on Wednesday if he can begin doing some weight training.

Because of his past arm troubles, Fox said, his recent MRI couldn't firmly rule out at least a partial ligament tear.

"The only thing they could see was that it wasn't completely torn, where the dye was leaking everywhere," he said. "As far as being able to read a small tear or sprain or whatever, there are a lot of cloudy areas. I've had three surgeries, so it's hard to tell exactly what's going on there. But as far as all my strength tests, everything was great. That's definitely reassuring that there isn't something major that is wrong here."

Yet Fox is miffed about why he has some of the symptoms he experienced before his second ligament-replacement surgery.

"I'm still getting numbness," he said. "I'm still getting tingling. Something is inflaming that nerve, or something is inflamed around the nerve. Nine times out of 10, it's the ligament. So [either]it's a strained ligament or a small tear in the ligament, which is causing the swelling. If it is a small tear, if I'm smart, it will heal. I can't rush back from it. If I try to rush back and it blows out, we all know what the answer is."

Fox said that he is thankful to Marlins management for encouraging him to do what's best for his career.

"This could be a drawn-out process," he said. "I can't say enough about this organization. The owner, the president, the GM, the assistant GM, everybody has reassured me that I should do what's right for my career. 'Don't rush back for us.' I've never had an organization tell me that. Right there, that meant the world to me. They are paying me a lot of money. They aren't paying me to rehab. When they tell me, 'Don't rush it to blow your career away,' that tells me a ton about this organization."

As for a time frame?

"Realistically, a minimum of two months," he said. "It could take two, three or four [months], or it could take the whole season. I don't know. I don't want to sit here and put a timetable on it. I want to be realistic. Two months is realistic."

we need a fire baller

I really do not like this move. I think Gracey was doing a better job than some of the guys we have and is a decent closer who would give Benitez some time off in maybe every 3 or 4 save opportunities. Not just that BUT I really dislike Toby. Nothing against him, just never liked his playing style. I tend to think that he leaves fat balls for the pitchers to whack at.

His ERA begs to differ. And Benitez won't need time off between every 3 or 4 saves- he had, what, 11 in a row before he needed a rest, and that was only because he pitched, like, 3 days in a row (or threw too many pitchers, one of those). I don't even think Graci would be McKeon's first choice if he decided to give Mando a day off.

I hope that Borland can make it, because we despretly need someone to come through in the bullpen. I am sort of disappointed to see Gracie get sent down, but he wasnt getting the job done so it just had to happen. I'm sure Justin Wayne isnt too happy about this because, now hes in control of the pink bag again. :lol

I think Borland will do good..I think he will save the season.

That's pretty bold statement.

I would just be happy to see him get a few key outs.

You're only saying that because he has less time to screw things up as much as the rest of the 'pen.
