Pierre's Base Stealing

Featured Replies

JP has been caught stealing quite a bit this year....9 of 24 attempts. They are always close plays. He was gunned down today on a mediocre throw that bounced before it got to the SS.

I noticed that JP is not taking a very big lead. All he needs is another 1/2 step and he would be safe most of the time.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Why doesn't JP take a bigger lead. He is pretty quick getting back to the bag....so why not take that extra 1/2 step?

ok first off it was louie who got caught stealing on a one hop throw pierre got caught on a good throw that did not hop and yea he is getting caught more and stealing less but wat u want better

2003 marlins which were like probaly like 7 games under .500 right now wit pierre like 30 steals already or a marlin team 7 games over wit pierre having 9 steals now its ok as long as were winning games

I think he is taking less leads due to the F.A.S.T. camp training. I saw him taking a lead off second base rather big, but he had the chance to take a walking lead instead of being held. Maybe he just needs to take some bigger leads, because stealing is only about 25% speed based.

Don't forget that with leading the league in steals last year, pitchers and catchers are just waiting for him. They are very aware of what's going on in the field.

Personally, I hate it when they send 'em to steal with 2 outs in a tight game.

yup. the leads he gets are terrible. just the other night harold reynolds on bbtn was ripping on him for that.

adjustments needs to be made. every play is very close, and even when he is safe it could have gone the other way.

well JP is no Scott Posednick...... white boy can flat out run......

i think its like 23 stolen bases and only been caught once......

thats freaking crazy..... and he's white...... thats whta makes it so f***ing astonishing........

thats true ni*ga. we all know white people cant do s*** other than get hits and move base to base depending on what the hitter does, play hockey and golf and shoot the fundamentally sound jumpshot and of course be the slow 7 footer. :plain

oh yeah and they can chase down dark people in their pickups and do crazy s*** to them but thats a different story. :plain

I love the way JP plays the game but instead of working on his legs in the off season, he should have strengthened his throwing arm. It's not mentioned here but the guy has no arm at all. Sure he can run down fly balls and he's saved many a pitcher's ass doing just that but in a close game in the late innings, he should be replaced for defensive purposes because he can barely balloon a throw to second base. He will never be able to throw someone out at home even hitting the cut off man.

I agree. Perhaps it's just more noticeable this year, but everyone is running on JP. Not only is his arm weak, but accuracy has not been too good this year as well. Throws to 3B or home from shallow center bounce in generally 5 to 10 ft off the mark.

On the other side, what JP gives us in clutch offense more than outweighs his defensive shortcomings.

Pierre is also batting second lately behind castillo, so if pierre gets on base you dont want to take too much of a lead and risk getting picked off with Lowell batting behidn you.

I think the SoFla sun is getting to JP and Cabs. They need a good two games off in order to recoup and get back in their game.

Basestealing is largely a waste of baesrunners. Some guy last year made a great analysis of all of JP's steals and they only netted us 9 runs. And that was when his steal rate was good.

In the game yesterday against the Reds (or was it the day before?) there was a guy on third and I believe it was Dunn who hit a deep sac fly almost to the warning track and Pierre caught it and fired it back to home plate as accurate and powerful as any other outfielder in the league and the guy on 3rd was tagging but went back to 3rd because he couldn't make it. Pierre's throwing arm basically saved us that run, and last year he never could have done something like that so before you say that he needs to work on his throwing arm instead of his legs, how do you know he hasn't? Because it's obvious his arm is a lot stronger this year.

Don't just assume he has a weak throwing arm because of last year, you don't know his offseason workout routine and his arm is significantly stronger than it was this time 1 year ago.

This year, while his arm still isn't that strong, it's a lot stronger than last year.

It was Larkin on 3rd and he couldn't handle JP's cannon.

The ball was not hit deep, but into shallow centerfield. JP caught it running in.

The runner tagged and retreated when he saw JP make a quick throw. He should have continued and would have scored because the throw bounced and was about 10 feet up the third base line.

Exactly.

Exactly. I may be stronger, but it is still below average
