June 17, 200422 yr one of the reasons why 2 or 3-year deals with our starters might have been a good idea.
June 17, 200422 yr Don't hold your expectations too high. Pavano, Lowell, Conine, etc may not be in our team next year. No Stadium, no money, no deals. Isnt the stadium situation looking good for us? I thought we were going to start construction and 'hope' for the state funds next year As far as I know there is nothing concrete yet.

The Padres did this and they are now playing in their ballpark.
June 17, 200422 yr Barring injury, I think Pavano has already played himself out of Florida. I think Pavano is the only major player that will be gone from this team next year, but I just don't think the Marlins will be able to afford to keep him. He's an under 30, 6'5 power pitcher with great stuff who uses all his pitches, and that doesn't come along every day of the week.
June 17, 200422 yr Right now he makes $3,800,000. Now let's say he gets offered $6 million by any other team, except Tampa Bay, the Marlins can offer him $5.5 million and beat the other team's offer. Florida has no state income tax and this is what allowed us to keep Castillo because the Mets couldn't get rid on New York State income tax. So we can give Carl a $1.7 million raise and probably beat the market.

Good one Cape, he's going to get offered A LOT MORE than that. I guarantee the Yankees and George's Pocketbook are going to have radar lock on Pavano.
June 17, 200422 yr Seven states have no state income tax: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. Only Florida, Texas, and Washington have Major League Baseball teams. Marlins, Devil Rays, Rangers, Astros, and Mariners. Everyone else has an automatic disadvantage in the $$$ dept.

George would have to offer almost $7 million to beat our $5.5 million offer.
June 17, 200422 yr It was an example. George would have to offer almost $7 million to beat our $5.5 million offer. Umm..... I don't think George will have a problem with offering a big, strong power pitcher who uses all his pitches and is heading into his prime 7 million a year.

I don't think George will have a problem with offering a big, strong power pitcher who uses all his pitches and is heading into his prime 7 million a year. Then add luxury tax, and New York City Income Tax, and New York State Sports Salary Tax and George would need almost $10 million to beat our $5.5 million. Guys, remember the Marlins will get alot more revenue sharing money this season because the Padres go from cashing in checks to paying checks and the Phillies increase their payments.

Pavano doesn't really seem like a real money grabbing player, and honestly if you're the Marlins you don't want to overpay the guy for one because then that sets the bar for the other four guys in the rotation, and then the money situation could really get out of hand
June 17, 200422 yr Well loyality is not a factor when George is throwing 6 years, 60 to 66 million in your face and the chance to be in the top of the yanks rotation. Even if Pavano isn't a money grabber, an offer like that is hard to turn down.
June 17, 200422 yr 6 years, $66 million means $11 million a year. The Marlins can beat the yearly salary by offering $7.7 million. 11 million -3.3 million (NY State Income Tax at 30%) ------------------------- $7.7 million
June 17, 200422 yr Yeah, because state income tax is often a factor when a player chooses where he goes.
June 17, 200422 yr Also the Marlins, HealthSouth, and Doctor's Hospital provide the best care in the major leagues. They kept Pudge healthy last year when no one could. The climate here is better for pitching than in New York. The ballpark here is better for pitchers than the ones in New York. The Marlins have won a championship more recently than the Yankees. The Marlins are getting a new ballpark and will keep a competitive team on the field.
June 17, 200422 yr Yeah, because state income tax is often a factor when a player chooses where he goes. Luis is not a Met because of it Magglio.
June 17, 200422 yr Why is everyone soooo worried about next year? Would you rather have Pavano pitching bad for next year we can keep a bad pitcher or him dominating how he is now and have a shot at repeating as World Series Champs? Seriously lets let next year handle itself and focus on this year.

June 17, 200422 yr Yeah, because state income tax is often a factor when a player chooses where he goes. uhhh... Ya They usually go where there is more money going into their pocket. Not the size of the actual contract.
