June 19, 200422 yr Author and what happens if Loria does raise payroll? you never know but I wouldnt turn that deal down at all and most of the core will always be back your gonna lose a player ever year or two(even if it is a Penny or a Pavano)
June 19, 200422 yr There is no guarenteeing that Marlins can sign the guy. Its a pretty big rsik He has no loyalty what so ever to this team, and nothing would stop him to sign with the Yanks or Boston and I'm sure both those team are going to be throwing the money at him.
June 19, 200422 yr can you guys read? I said assuming you resign him. Well thats a huge assumption to make
June 19, 200422 yr Author Ramp, but Beltran means no Pavano, Penny, Pierre, or Benitez next year. Pierre might be gone anyway 1 of Penny or Pavano would be back and who knows about Benitez neither of us have crystal balls brohan

By trading for Beltran our farm system would take a serious hit, and if we were to sign him, we would need our farm system even more because we wouldn't be able to sign most of our players, and if we don't resign him we give up probably 3 or 4 of our top 10 prospects for a half-year rental. So even if Beltran is resigned we're in a tough situation. My theory has always been that we should get a guy who can play left field, is preferably left-handed or a switch hitter, that can hit right handed pitching and provide some pop off the bench, and won't cost us a lot of prospects. If we're going to give up top prospects it should be for a relief pitcher.

It sees a bright future....no wait, that's a light bulb.
June 19, 200422 yr Ramp i always agree what with you say, But not on this one. Trying JP (who does alot more things for this ball club then Beltran) would be dumb. I would agree in bring him here to play this season and maybe re-signing him but not if JP, Pavano, Penny have to go.
June 19, 200422 yr Author Pierre might be gone anyway Why would he be gone? because he could get up to $5mil per in FA and we have Nunez(who i guess the FO likes) and Eric Reid waiting in the wings Reed is a JP clone
June 19, 200422 yr Pierre might be gone anyway Why would he be gone? what would a player of Pierre's Caliber get in the FA market? Probably more than we can pay him.
June 19, 200422 yr Pierre is not my biggest concern with the Beltran deal. It's being able to resign this pitching staff, that should be the absolute #1 priority for the FO.
June 19, 200422 yr KC wants a 3B and C that can start in 2005. We don't have that. Forget it. The guy is not worth it. We can get by with a cheaper bat.
June 19, 200422 yr just gonna bump this up for those who werent up late i two almost always agree with your post but this one i dont cause i dont think beltran is worth losing a Penny or Pavano...another thing is this team would not be were it is without pierre this guy is what gets us going along with castillo...reed i dont know to much about this guy but if he is a clone why isn't he up already cause nunez sucks and conine is struggling....i would love to have beltran but if we resign him there goes the core...
June 19, 200422 yr Did you even read what Ramp posted? I agree with Ramp. Only if you can get him to resign.
June 19, 200422 yr Did you even read what Ramp posted? I agree with Ramp. Only if you can get him to resign. thats what i meant if we re-sign beltran from what i have read we dont have to much cash lying around so it would mean we have to let go some SP...and that is what i think is not worth it...
June 19, 200422 yr Author first of all, my apologies... JP wont be a FA till after 05, and I knew Reed would be ready when JP would be a FA, and looks like I got the years messed up but I still think(and most sane would too) that Beltran is a significant upgrade for JP or.... you could keep Pierre too and wait for his deal to run out
