July 2, 200422 yr meh....recently ballclubs have been reluctant to giving out big contracts. I doubt that pavano or penny goes more than 5 million a year each. I dont know i just dont see it, 435950 you are fooling yourself then

I dont know i just dont see it, 435950 you are fooling yourself then 435954 Maybe. Its just that sometimes i look at it as a homer's point of view than as a GMs point of view. Since we get to see him alot you feel that there are "better" out there and that theres no way they can be "worth" that much
July 2, 200422 yr Author Pettitte was an Elite Pitcher. This guys still need to prove a lot 435949 True but both pitchers are putting up better seasons than Pettitte did last year. Like I said they won't get 12 million, but they will most definitely get no less than 7 million.

July 2, 200422 yr I was just thinking on ways to solve all of our problems and this popped into my mind. We make a deal with Baltimore. O's get: Brad Penny Marlins get: Melvin Mora, BJ Ryan, and a prospect. Mora can play anywhere on the field. He can fill in for Sea Bass when he falls into one of his long slumps, and can play left field also, and BJ Ryan could step right into the set-up role. After we do this deal. We go out and make a move for Miguel Batista. This guy is a very underrated pitcher, I was watching him today and he totally shut down the D-Rays. I know most people don't want to deal Penny, but I have a hard time believing that we'll be able to resign both Penny and Pavano this offseason. 435892 oh man - people are just getting delusional now. 435922 I know it's not likely, but if feels all our needs. Mora is hitting over .350 with 12 homers. He can play multiple positions. BJ Ryan would really shore up the pen, and then we could go out and get a guy in Batista who isn't much of a downgrade from Penny. 435933 ok, just so you don't think i am brushing you off, here are a few problems with your plan: 1) Penny is worth a ton more than those three players. he's young, he's won two World Series games, he's having a great year, he throws fire, and he's cheap. honeslty, we likely could have gotten Beltran straight-up if we were ready to deal Penny (and were willing to pay the $$$). 2) if you call Penny "inconsistent", i'd hate to think what you'd say about Mora if he were here. I urge you to look at his statistics from last year. before the all star break he hit .349. after the all-star break? .188. this guy is a streaky hitter, not the kind of guy who can save our offense. 3) you simply do not trade pitchers like Penny. look around, it just doesn't happen. Oakland doesn't put Mulder on the trading block just b/c they're not scoring runs. they find other ways to make it happen. The Braves turned their roster over 100 times in the 90's, but Glavine, Maddux, and Smoltz were there for almost the whole time. it's just simply the wrong way to play. pitching wins rings....see last October if you want proof.

The biggest point I was trying to make with this thread though is, if we have a chance to fill the void in the lineup and the bullpen by dealing Penny I think we should do it. I don't think he will be with this team next year anyway. There are a lot more quality starters out on the market right now, than there are quality arms out of the pen, or big bats.
July 2, 200422 yr Author please dont compare Mulder and Penny 435981 What do you think Ramp? Would you trade Penny to fix our problems on offense and in the bullpen?
