June 12, 200323 yr Lowell at first? General Manager Admin Beinfest said the Marlins are not considering moving third baseman Mike Lowell to first -- a suggestion by some in the organization as a way to avoid trading Lowell, who could earn at least $8 million next year through arbitration. If the Marlins move Lowell, they likely would promote third baseman Miguel Cabrera from Class AA Carolina. Cabrera, 20, is batting.374 with nine home runs and 56 RBI in the Southern League. Cabrera has worked out at first base, and there has been what one team source characterized as "quiet discussion about a possible move." But there are no no plans to make him a first baseman. One scenario would be to move Lowell to first base, allowing the Marlins to trade first baseman Derrek Lee and/or second baseman Luis Castillo. "That's absolutely ridiculous," Lowell said. "But hey, I'm under contract to them. If they tell me to play first, I'll play first." Beinfest wouldn't discuss the team's options on Lowell's future but did respond to the first-base question: "It's not something we're considering." McKeon reiterated Wednesday that he does not think the team will trade Lowell. But he also said that may be "wishful thinking." Last June, manager Jeff Torborg said he had a feeling the team wouldn't trade Cliff Floyd, but Floyd and pitcher Ryan Dempster were traded the day after the All-Star Game. http://www.palmbeachpost.com/sports/conten...b240bf007d.html
June 12, 200323 yr How exactly does this keep Lowell from being traded? 1) You could make him play defense behind a hot dog stand in right field, it isn't going to affect his offensive numbers. 2)And if doesn't affect his offensive numbers, than it doesn't affect his escalating arbitration value. 3) If it doesn't affect his escalating arbie value, then the Marlins will still look to ship him. 4) And if the Marlins want to ship him, he's as good as gone. Plus, you'd have a better chance trading ice to an eskimo that trading off D-Lee for anything of comparable potential value. He's here to stay. Also, how are they not able to trade Castillo and/or Lee without Lowell at 1B?? You've got a slightly better than average infielder in Fox, and Banks would play nicely at 1b, thank you very much. A more obvious answer is they ship Lowell b/t the All-Star break and deadline and then call Cabrera up.
June 12, 200323 yr anything to keep Mike and get rid of Mr Leave You're wise beyond your years Ramp...............
June 12, 200323 yr Didn't make much sense to me either Fillet. As if the thing forcing them to trade Lowell was that they have nowhere else to put him.... Throw Cabrera in left field if it comes to that.....
June 13, 200323 yr anything to keep Mike and get rid of Mr Leave Why is that? Lowell is older than Derrek, yet before this year has not been that much better. They have pretty similar numbers the last two years and the fact that Derrek started the year in cleanup shows more of what people thought of him and what he is capable of than Lowell. Just because he has not had the greatest first third of the season does not mean he can't pick it up! I mean he is on pace for almost 100runs and 32 HR and that is playing poor as hell too. If he ever heats up he can literally still post great numbers. Get off his back. He is great with the glove too.
June 13, 200323 yr of course he will heat up... because the Marlins will be out of it by then... the guy doesnt play well when it counts.... maybe he will come out of this offensive coma.....we need his bat NOW.... im sure you are now typing up his current stats and they look nice and all but he still stinks when it counts

If he heats up in June/July and we are out of it, then that is the whole team's fault, not one players. If I do remember correctly too for as bad a 1st half player as DLee is, Lowell is just as bad or near as bad in the 2nd half. So why don't we all rip him after the break every second of the day? I mean his .232avg with 10HR and 34RBI last year after the break don't look great to me. And his RBI totals from year to year fall dramatically after the break if I do recall off the top of my head, even though the ABs are similar. Hmm....
June 13, 200323 yr the season is normally over in the 2nd half...and Mike loses any protection he had... I am not disputing the fact that he slumps in the 2nd half...but Mike Lowell plays best when the team is in some contention.... Id like to see his stats when the team is actually in a race in the 2nd half...same goes for DLee

Id like to see his stats when the team is actually in a race in the 2nd half...same goes for DLee And before this year and Alex sarting to play well, what protection has Derrek Lee ever had? The answer is none, yet he has always put up the same numbers as Lowell. He doesn't have his RBI chances and he doesn't have Lowell's protection, yet the numbers are remarkably similar. How do you pass that one off Ramp? Just because Lowell is a fast starter and Lee is a slow starter does not mean he is more clutch because the team is in contention! Every team is in contention to start the year, the records all start at 0-0 for god's sake! If the records restarted in the 2nd half, then you would think Lee was the clutch one and Lowell sucked. Facts are facts, there is no two ways about this either because what I have said is true!
June 13, 200323 yr DLee doesnt have the rbi chances Lowell does? come on now, that isnt true.... the thing is, DLee rarely knocks in a run when the opportunity is there....especially when we need it.... no one will ever say Lee is clutch, no matter if the records resarted in the 2nd half or not.. Lowell plays well the whole 1st half...not just the first 2 weeks when wins and losses dont matter much...
June 13, 200323 yr I think the marlins should do that. Derek proved already he cant hit. Lowell is the heart and soul of this team and needs to stay here in florida. Cabrera has been good and can be at 3rd if lowell moves. All of this would be OK with me but Move Derek!

June 13, 200323 yr Please get off cloud nine and realize that D.Lee is just average player.Don't even put him in the same category as Mike Lowell.
June 13, 200323 yr That's a copout attitude...... but it's true Maybe in your opinion, but I definitely think you are wrong and it's not true. Please get off cloud nine and realize that D.Lee is just average player.Don't even put him in the same category as Mike Lowell. Look, I never said DLee is great, but he is not terrible either. And just because he is not having as good of a year as Lowell, SO FAR, that does not mean Lowell is amazing and great and much better. I think the previous few years indicate that they are pretty close statistically and that they won't be far off this year. And if they are, some how, then they won't next year. You are on cloud 9 if you think because Lowell has finally hit HRs that he is amazing. And by the way, I do put him in Lowell's category. He is better defensively and I think that makes up for some offense, even though I think they are not far off overall offensively either, this slow start not counted.

If you breakdown D.Lee stats even further you will come across his obvious flaws. He can't hit when the gam on the line and most his rib's come in meaning less time.On the other hand Lowell produces when it matters and drives run more consistently.

June 13, 200323 yr O come on that's everyone's answer but has he done it yet? D Lee appears to me to be of The Lazy type... I don't beleive that he has made strides to improve and it shows by his numbers...
