Shaq's interest in Heat gets a shrug from Pfund

according to sportscenter, the deal would be for brian grant, lamar odom, and probably a 1st round draft pick.

Thats a even deal, it would be great if they could change Odom to Jones but that would never happen.

447574

who knows what could happen give them a few draft picks why not and keep odom they can have CB4 he'll be a good ball player

Link

thats a link to the article on ESPN. Anywaysto whoever said they wouldnt do it by getting 2 high contracts and a good player in CB. the lakers dont have a choice right now. shaq wants to go and will not go back and they arent gonna let him walk just like that without getting something in return. i beleive all it will take will be EJ,grant,CB,and a first round pick. they are just tryin to match contracts now and recieve a young player and a pick. they are gettin both of those. i honestly beleive riley is to in love with Odom to just have him for one year, the guy does awsome for u then u welch on ur promise and trade him. Odom and wade will go nowhere but possibly grant ,ej, caron and maybe 2 future first round picks will do the trick

the lakers won't even consider dallas without nowitzki so i highly doubt they'll consider miami with not even one of the top 2 players.

i still don't see it happening but hey you never know.

Heat reportedly working on Shaq deal

FOXSports.com

It seems things have deteriorated so badly in Laker land that there's no chance or scenario in which Shaquille O'Neal would return to Los Angeles next season. Lakers owner Jerry Buss is committed to "deal" the superstar center, the Riverside Press-Enterprise reported Thursday.

And one team that has emerged as a frontrunner for O'Neal's services and hefty contract is Miami. Sources told the newspaper that the Lakers have fielded about 17 or 18 offers and narrowed them down to about five or six.

The deal with the Heat would include former Clipper Lamar Odom, Brian Grant and probably a first-round draft pick, sources said.

The Lakers have asked for rookie sensation Dwyane Wade, but the Heat refuse to part with him.

To make any deal work, the NBA stipulates that the Lakers have to come within 15 percent plus $100,000 of O'Neal's $27.6 million salary for next season.

The tumultuous situation between Buss and O'Neal started during training camp, when O'Neal demanded an extension and yelled, "Now you gonna pay me!" at the owner during an exhibition game.

Buss also was frustrated by O'Neal's lack of conditioning and consistent demands for more money, sources disclosed. O'Neal wanted a two-year, $60 million extension.

O'Neal did express a desire to play for Rudy Tomjanovich, most likely the Lakers' new coach by Friday. But with all bridges burned, the three-time NBA Finals MVP appears to have played his last game for the purple and gold.

"I just feel terrible for Rudy because I wanted to play for him," O'Neal said. "But I ain't coming back there."

Shaq for CB4, EJ, and grant and a first round pick but odom I dont know

i just dont feel right trading odom for a one year rental in shaq.

447794

give Shaq his extension that he wants then.

447795

yea the 2 year 60 mill that he wants. no thanx

odom would have to be in the trade, either him or wade, and no way the heat should trade wade, i like odom but getting shaq would just elevate this franchise in so many ways (only if it's more then just one year) and you gotta think it would help attendance drastically. there's no way they'll do it without one of the two "untouchables" though, trading grant or jones is probably a part of the deal that the heat would want to get done more then the lakers.

sure Shaq would increase attendance and elevate this franchise but not in the long run. remember, marathon..not a sprint (i always wanted to say that)

i don't feel right giving up odom, he has finally found a place where he fits in, his play fits in, everything is right. plus shaq would mess up the team bond.

i don't know, it's all a big blurr

Isn't it about winning now?The future will belong to Wade and Wright anyways.

of course its about winning now but at the same time, you shouldn't be like "well f*** the future" and LO is part of the future just as much as Wade and Wright IMO. It's Riley's call but I don't really agree with the idea, I dunno.

I say:

f***ed the future! :p

Shaq&Wade = Enough to win east

why is aquiring shaq a Fu***** the future move? we will still have wade and if and when shaq leaves, it will free up so much cap space, that the heat could sign top noch free agents

I've looked at this from many angles and I think this could work out well for the Heat.

Caron, Odom, Grant, 1st rounder to Lakers for Shaq and a 2nd rounder

Reason 1) We keep the future franchise player in Wade.

Reason 2) Even if we got rid of Odom + Caron + Grant, our team is still good. Start Rasual at SF and with his long lanky arms, he could become a great defender. Eddie Jones could become one of the best role players in the league. Sign a cheap PF or start... MALIK! (Yeah, we resigned his ass...)

Reason 3) If it doesn't work out, when Shaq's contract and EJ's contract expires, we have tons of cap room to go get some other guys. And hopefully by that time, Dorrell Wright will develop into a solid player. And we'd still have Dwyane.

Reason 4) IT WOULD GET US TONS OF FANS. Triple A would sell out every damn night.

Reason 5) Great chance to win now, not in a few years. Everyone said we're one big man away form being good, but really, there aren't any "MUST PICK-UP" big men out there except for Shaq. And Blount resigned with the C's anyway.

Go for it and hope it brings you a championship!

Report: Heat a player in Shaq talks

BY ISRAEL GUTIERREZ

igutierrez@herald.com

ORLANDO - What once would have been considered a dream has become a possibility.

Rumors of Shaquille O'Neal being traded now involve the Heat, and team President Pat Riley did nothing to dispel those rumors Thursday.

Several sources said the Heat is among three teams still legitimately in the mix for O'Neal, with Miami willing to part with Lamar Odom, Brian Grant, a first-round draft pick and any other necessary minimal-salary players for O'Neal.

The two other teams said to be involved are the Pacers and Mavericks, though each of the three teams is unwilling to part with key pieces the Lakers are asking for in return.

The Pacers aren't willing to include Jermaine O'Neal, the Mavericks haven't budged on Dirk Nowitzki, and the Heat is not willing to part ways with Dwyane Wade.

The Pacers were not on the list of teams O'Neal reportedly told the Lakers he wanted to be traded to, and the Mavericks are in the Western Conference, which is where the Lakers don't want O'Neal to be.

That leaves the Heat, which was on O'Neal's wish list, as a seemingly good fit. But will the Lakers agree to a trade when all they're getting in return is a potential All-Star in Odom, a 32-year-old Grant on his last legs, and a low draft pick?

WAITING ON KOBE?

The team might be forced into such a questionable deal if Kobe Bryant, an unrestricted free agent who the Lakers have proclaimed as their top priority, gives the team an ultimatum.

While Riley wouldn't specifically address that reported offer, he did acknowledge the idea that O'Neal is available.

''It's not a news bulletin that Shaq's on the market,'' Riley said. ``We, like everybody else, are listening. That's it. There's nothing that's going on right now other than what's out there.

``I've had conversations with 19 teams in the last two days about sign-and-trades and everything. We're talking with everybody, but I'm not going to talk about this specific rumor.''

Since taking over the Heat, Riley has managed to make trades for stars such as Alonzo Mourning, Tim Hardaway, Jamal Mashburn and Eddie Jones, while also luring restricted free agent Odom from the Los Angeles Clippers last summer. So it wouldn't be beyond the realm of possibility that Riley could make something like this work, even if it meant giving up one of the team's brightest young stars in Odom to do so.

''Tracy McGrady got traded, he was on the market,'' Riley said. ``I've heard three or four other great name players on the market, Shaq being one of them, and you have to pursue them. You're foolish if you don't try to pursue them or at least listen.

`SO PREMATURE'

``Everything right now is so premature. Nothing can happen until next Wednesday anyhow.''

To make a trade work for O'Neal, scheduled to make $27.7 million next season, the Heat would have to include Odom, Grant and one or two more minimum-contract players.

But the team could be convinced to add Caron Butler and his $1.9 million salary into the pot.

It's doubtful, though, the Lakers would commit to trading O'Neal without knowing Bryant's plans.

And while it would make sense for the Lakers to trade O'Neal out of the Western Conference, there is no word that Miami's offer is considered the best.

If nothing else, the Heat's rumored involvement in a trade for O'Neal can only brighten what has been so far a dreary summer free agency period for the Heat.

Not only has the team lost backup point guard and sixth man Rafer Alston to the Toronto Raptors, the pool of free agent big men is becoming shallower by the day, with Mark Blount agreeing to a six-year deal with the Celtics and Brian Skinner agreeing to a five-year contract with the 76ers.

Riley is not in panic mode, however, as he insists on remaining fiscally responsible this offseason.

A BIT `SPENDY'

''I think the market at the front of free agency is a little bit more spendy, a little more desperation to get somebody that you need versus what you really need,'' Riley said. ``We know where we are financially.

``What [Alston] got, we couldn't match it. We're not heading that way economically, plus he's a backup point guard for us and he got a hell of a deal. That's not in our plan, so we wish him nothing but the best.''

I've looked at this from many angles and I think this could work out well for the Heat.

Caron? The deal isn't even with Caron...it's only Odom, Grant, and a 1st rounder.

Start Malik and Rasual? Excuse me, let me go barf. That's a lot of COULDS.

I don't think we should put everything on Wade. Everyone's like "Well we still have Wade" yeah well we need more than just Wade.

And heres a Dan Lebatard Article:

 , Though if the heat made a deal, It'd be interesting to see if a third team was involved to help the salary instead of odom or Butler in the deal.

Personally, i think If theres anyway to keep Odom, and Wade. While gettin Shaq, you do the deal.

IN MY OPINION

No star is bigger than Shaq

DAN LE BATARD

dlebatard@herald.com

Shaquille O'Neal would only be the biggest sports star this town has ever known.

That's all.

Bigger than Dan Marino.

Bigger than Don Shula and Pat Riley.

Bigger than Gary Sheffield, Pavel Bure and Ricky Williams combined.

Bigger than all the alums the University of Miami's football factory could stack on top of each other.

You can make the argument that Marino, who played his entire career here and has no statistical equal at the glamour position of America's most popular sport, would remain larger locally.

But you can't make that argument nationally, not when one of the athletes in the discussion wore a mask throughout his career and the other is 7-foot-1, 350 pounds.

Shaq would be, in physical stature and in sports stature, the biggest thing South Florida has ever seen.

That's one of the reasons Pat Riley should be pushing his entire roster over to the Lakers and telling them to take whatever they want with only one exception.

You can have either Lamar Odom or Dwyane Wade, L.A., but you can't have both Odom and Wade.

TAKE IT ALL, L.A.

Anything else is yours, L.A., for the NBA's most dominant player.

You want Caron Butler, too? Done. You want us to involve a third team and trade Butler and Eddie Jones there for another player you want? Done. You want Riley to crawl from here to Los Angeles with Micky Arison on his back to kiss Jerry Buss' shoes? Done.

O'Neal would make the Heat matter instantaneously. You are going deep into the playoffs in this weak conference even if you throw him out on the floor all by himself. Look at all the awful centers in the Eastern Conference. You can go to the conference finals with O'Neal and four Gary Colemans.

And this is important: Given the way O'Neal has been disrespected recently, you will be getting a motivated, angry Shaq. The best kind, in other words.

You can't fall too in love with the Heat as presently formed, no matter how nice a run they gave us. Remember, for all that cheering late last season, this team was still 42-40, and that has never once been good enough to win a title. Odom and Wade have room to grow, yes, but nothing in this league is as grown as O'Neal.

No matter how often the pieces have changed around him, O'Neal always gets at least as far in the playoffs as the Heat did last season.

It is flabbergasting that this is even a possibility -- flabbergasting that O'Neal is available, doubly flabbergasting Miami has enough to get into the game for his services.

Odom, Brian Grant and a future first-round pick for the most unstoppable force this league has known in decades?

You are kidding, right?

That has to be a typo, a misprint, a future sitcom possibility.

If the Lakers can't get more than that for Shaq, Jack Nicholson should lead an angry mob that chases general manager Mitch Kupchak out of town with torches and pitchforks. But here's why the trade makes sense: The Lakers want to trade O'Neal out of their conference because you don't want to be haunted by a ghost this large. That eliminates big spenders like Dallas and Sacramento, which have more and better pieces to give L.A.

HEAT ON HIS WISH LIST

Indiana has more to give, too, but Shaq doesn't want to live there and, unlike the Heat, he hasn't put the Pacers on his wish list. The teams in the East with the money to give O'Neal an extension and the right pieces to entice the Lakers is pretty limited.

After all the rotten luck Riley has had here, everything from bad bounces against the Knicks to bad contracts for Jones and Grant, this would be a pretty enormous bit of good fortune to fall in his lap. Riley has always built around centers, from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to Patrick Ewing to Alonzo Mourning, and he has to be salivating at the possibility of pulling off the NBA's most seismic move.

O'Neal makes everyone better, as Kobe Bryant is about to learn to his bitter dismay. His perpetual double-teams open up the floor for all his teammates, which is why guys such as Robert Horry and Derek Fisher were always hitting wide-open shots.

Most NBA players can hit open jumpers. A player like Rasual Butler would be twice as good with Shaq on his side. And Butler's defensive weaknesses would be erased by having 350 pounds of assistance guarding his back.

ESPN threw out some interesting numbers Thursday as this trade grew legs: Shaq has more All-Star appearances than the entire Heat franchise (11 to 8). He has more 40-point games than the Heat franchise (47 to 12). He has more 20 rebound games than the Miami franchise (34 to 26).

This isn't an official league stat, but he also has more commercials, more rap albums and more movies than the entire Heat franchise.

He also has, no lie, more live fish tanks in the trunk of his car than any Heat player. And, no lie, he also paints his toe nails pretty colors more often than any Heat player.

O'Neal has averaged 27 points and 12 rebounds a game for more than a decade.

The idea of having that on Miami's roster?

It ought to have Heat fans teetering between hyperventilating and breathless.

With Shaq, Wade and even CB4 and EJ on the Heat, they are an immediate title contender. Even if it is only for a couple of years, I think it's safe to say this current Heat team will never win a title. They'll be damn good, but not title good.

Le Batard is such an idiot. He's basically saying "oh let's make this trade work just to make South Florida happy"

spare me.

Le Batard is such an idiot. He's basically saying "oh let's make this trade work just to make South Florida happy"

spare me.

448415

agree. lebetard doesnt know s***. i dont care if it makes the bandwagoners happy. i want this team intact with odom and wade when eddie and grant come off the books in 2 years. then we will have money to sign a legit big man and be title contenders without giving up our whole roster. even with shaq it isnt a guarentee that we will win any title. id rather try to compete for 2 years then get cap space from eddie and grant leaving.

I'm totally with you Sheff. That's the best plan IMO. When Grant and EJ are gone, we'll have Wade, Odom, Butler, and Wright as a core plus cash. That's gonna be sick. I'm worried though that Riles is getting impatient and wants to be contending now. Being in the playoffs, 2nd round at that, made him hungry. I mean you can't blame him but I don't want him to make any mistakes because of this.

It takes time to build a championship team. Plus, Shaq couldn't even pull off a title with Kobe, Malone (well I guess he doesn't really count), and Payton....have fun with Wade.
