Marlins, Bump ready the brooms

Florida (46-46) at New York Mets (46-46), 7:10 p.m. ET

By Joe Frisaro / MLB.com

From an emotional standpoint, rallying from four runs down to beat the Mets, 6-5, Monday is one of the most significant wins for the Marlins this season.

On Tuesday, the Marlins strive to keep the momentum building in the finale of this two-game set at Shea Stadium.

The Marlins seek a sweep, which would build more hope with a two-game set against the Phillies beginning on Wednesday in Philadelphia.

After 60 big league appearances as a reliever, Nate Bump is set for his first start. Throughout his minor league career, Bump was a starter, but he has been used in relief since being called up from Triple-A last June.

The Marlins turned to Bump to fill the vacated rotation spot created because Josh Beckett is on the disabled list with a skin tear to his right middle finger.

Bump has not allowed a run in his last seven appearances, a stretch of eight innings.

Entering the season, Bump was one of the Marlins' top right-handed setup relievers. But he got off to a slow start, and was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque in mid-June. With the Isotopes, he appeared in three games, and made two starts.

In his career, Bump is 6-3 with a 4.50 ERA with 39 strikeouts and 39 walks.

"Alex might have made three of the best plays we may have seen in a while. If he doesn't win the Gold Glove this year, I don't know who does. No offense Edgar [Renteria of the Cardinals]."-- Lowell on Alex Gonzalez and his three great plays Monday

Quick Hits:(Credit: Joe Frisaro / Special to MLB.com)

  • The Marlins have dropped four straight road series, last taking a series away from home June 8-10 at Cleveland, where they won two of three.
  • Juan Pierre remains the only player in the league to play in every inning. The center fielder has appeared in all 822 innings the Marlins have had.

i really think last night was the beginning of good (or maybe great) things to come. so awesome to see that rally

I'll be there in all my glory baby....look for the biggest damn broom and the loudest damn Marlin fan in the stadium.....

I do not think bump will go very far but I will pray to la virgen that we hit like we did in the last innings. The bullpen for the mets is even worse than ours. :D
