July 31, 200422 yr The Trade... Choi Penny Murphy for Lo Duca Mota Enc IMO: Crap Except for Mota this deal is crap... Lets look at some stats to backup my arguement here... Paul Lo Duca 2004 Season: .301 AVG / .351 OBP / .444 SLG / .795 SLG / 10 HRs / 49 RBIs After looking at these stats, your first reaction will be: But... 2003 July: .233 AVG / .319 OBP / .340 SLG / .659 OPS August: .240 AVG / .288 OBP / .298 SLG / .586 OPS September: .210 AVG / .278 OBP / .259 SLG / .537 OPS Post All-Star Game: .226 AVG / .282 OBP / .293 SLG / .575 OPS 2001-2003 July: .275 AVG / .337 OBP / .440 SLG / .777 OPS August: .249 AVG / .285 OBP / .341 SLG / .626 OPS September: .244 AVG / .325 OBP / .356 SLG / .681 OPS Post All-Star Game: .252 AVG / .306 OBP / .374 SLG / .680 OPS Notice the trend? Now many of you would say, "Oh, that was last year!" Guess what doods... Last 7 Days: .238 AVG / .333 OBP / .476 SLG / .810 OPS July: .250 AVG / .330 OBP / .512 SLG / .842 OPS Juan Encarnacion 2004 Season: .235 AVG / .289 OBP / .417 SLG / .705 OPS / 13 HR / 43 RBIs Last 7 Days: .192 AVG / .250 OBP / .385 SLG / .635 SLG Post All-Star: .211 AVG / .268 OBP / .342 SLG / .610 SLG Now for the plus side of this trade: Guillermo Mota 2004 Season: 2.14 ERA / 1.24 WHIP / 63 IP / 7.43 K/9 :thumbup But lets remember one thing... 2001-2003 Post All-Star 4.29 ERA After seeing all this I'll say one thing... Make me eat crow Beinfest... :plain
July 31, 200422 yr I'm with you DT, and nothing would make me happier than to be proven wrong here. But Encarnacion is a BELOW AVERAGE CORNER OUTFIELDER, spin it any way you want with RISP stats and RBIs and his nice arm in the field, the guy puts up subpar hitting numbers. Lo Duca's a gamer & a welcome addition, but he clearly wears down, & how's a guy 5'10", 180# going to handle catching in 400 degree south florida heat? we'll find out.... Hopefully Redmond can keep him fresh, I hope for the best from him for the 2 months he plays here. I couldn't even watch the game tonight.... too disgusted over this.
July 31, 200422 yr but Enc will magically start playing better once he gets here, trust me. I like the pickup of Mota, but no set-up man is worth a productive hitter or solid starting pitcher.
July 31, 200422 yr we now cut the game to 7 innings we have 5 players hitting over .300, a streaking Conine and 2 very streaky hitters we have our team speed back we dont need a 5th starter except for a 5-6 more times because of off days I think our team D may have improved as well

Choi may not have hit .300 but he more than made up with that with his power and on base ability.
July 31, 200422 yr hey ramp can u say PWNED. thats what u just did to them. 485613 how bout you contribute something useful for once instead of the worthless s*** you always post. oh yeah... PWNED
July 31, 200422 yr we dont need a 5th starter except for a 5-6 more times because of off days 485608 the division will probably be won by 2 or 3 games.

PWNED 485622 how bout u do something meaningful for the forums and stop the f*** spamming with your hatred towards the trade. you opinion is .00000000001% of the population of marlins fans, meaning your opinion doesnt mean s***
July 31, 200422 yr Author hey ramp can u say PWNED. thats what u just did to them. 485613 What do you prefer? Choi batting .270 / Brad Penny and his 105 Ks or Lo Duca wearing down in the South Florida heat / Enc batting below .200... PWNED...
July 31, 200422 yr it just does! let sit back and watch before we rip it into a new one.... me thinks we are takin the East 485624 I agree with you Ramp. Before the trade, we did not have a team to make it to the playoffs. Too many weaknesses. All of them have been addressed and now we have a much better shot, IMO.
July 31, 200422 yr funny how the dodgers fans think we stole from them and all u ppl think they stole from us. take off the fanboy blindfolds this deal works for both sides.
July 31, 200422 yr I am neither too happy or too upset with the trade overall, obviously time will tell, and I think if any deals are made tomorrow it may clarify things. But, I think Mota tends to get overlooked in this deal. This year, he gives us a better setup man than weve had in a long time. And he signed for two more years. If Benitez prices out of our range, Mota could very well be the next closer for a couple of years.
July 31, 200422 yr But as you know Encarnacion was on the team last year. He did nothing wrong. Just like Pudge he got every clutch hit and never hit into a double play. And he allows us to move Cabrera back to leftfield where he never made a mistake last year. LoDuca.. well.. that will change because the weather will keep him fresh here. Yep yep yep.
July 31, 200422 yr as a stats guy, i have to agree with you completely, DT. some more numbers that have been left out: choi makes $310k this year, and he'll be making peas until 2007 when he's arbitration eligible. for a team as cash-strapped as us, we need to keep guys who cost us nothing. choi is 25 and all upside. penny is 26 and all upside. enc claims to be 28 and his career has been on the decline since 2000. lo duca is a 32-year-old rent-a-catcher the same age as pudge. mota is a 31-year-old reliever whose value is at its peak. does all this really justify what is at best a "wash" offensively, an upgrade at bullpen, and a serious blow at SP?
July 31, 200422 yr PENNY IS GONE AFTER THE YEAR ANYWAY!!! WE ARENT GONNA PAY HIM 8 MILL IN ARBITRATION SO GET RID OF HIM NOW.JESUS!!

July 31, 200422 yr funny how the dodgers fans think we stole from them and all u ppl think they stole from us. take off the fanboy blindfolds this deal works for both sides. 485631 They want to keep a clubhouse leader (LoDuca). The other boards I visit the Dodgers fans are ecstatic about the talent they acquired. Then again they realize the value of starting pitching and OPS.
July 31, 200422 yr PENNY IS GONE AFTER THE YEAR ANYWAY!!! WE ARENT GONNA PAY HIM 8 MILL IN ARBITRATION SO GET RID OF HIM NOW.JESUS!! 485644 So will LoDuca, and we got him for his worst two months.
July 31, 200422 yr choi is a willingham clone he can be replaced! mota is an original and loduca is a rare hitting catcher with speed. and penny was gone after the season get over it!
July 31, 200422 yr this almost sounds like last year when we gave up a truckload of prospects for UUU and Conine
July 31, 200422 yr PENNY IS GONE AFTER THE YEAR ANYWAY!!! WE ARENT GONNA PAY HIM 8 MILL IN ARBITRATION SO GET RID OF HIM NOW.JESUS!! 485644 We could've done better and without it being at the expense of Choi. I was always for trading Penny but it had to be for young players that would help us in the present as well as the future, and if we couldn't get that done we might as well trade him for prospects when the offseason.
July 31, 200422 yr hes been bad in the second half for 2 years and u all think its automatic now..incredible. players arent machines they vary in their ability every year.
July 31, 200422 yr this almost sounds like last year when we gave up a truckload of prospects for UUU and Conine 485661 There was never a question of whether we improved our current ballclub with those deals.
