For those worried about Lo Duca leaving...

Recommended Posts

New team, new family member: Marlins catcher Paul Lo Duca is adjusting to more than just a new team after having been traded to Florida by Los Angeles.

Lo Duca's wife, Sonia, is 6 1/2 months pregnant with the couple's first child. They have been told it will be a girl.

"I'm more worried about supporting two ladies than all that's going on," Lo Duca said.

But does he harbor a grudge against the Dodgers?

"I know it's a business," Lo Duca said. "(But) I want to go back in there and kick their butts, I'll tell you that. Am I rooting against them? Yeah. Wouldn't you?"

The Marlins play the Dodgers in Los Angeles during a road trip later this month.

Judging by that, he's here as long as we want him :shifty

And an update on 'Mando:

Marlins closer Armando Benitez, who is eligible to come off the disabled list (elbow) this weekend, threw what pitching coach Wayne Rosenthal called an "outstanding" bullpen session Tuesday afternoon at Bank One Ballpark.

Rosenthal's hope, at least in the short term, is to limit Benitez to one inning of work at most per appearance.

"That's what we got (Guillermo) Mota for, anyway, to make that possible" Rosenthal said of the trade that brought the Marlins the set-up man from Los Angeles. "We'll try not to use (Benitez) more than an inning at a time. We think that's how we can be most effective and get the best use out of all our personnel."

Good to hear he's doing well.

The best catchers available this winter are Mike Matheny and Sandy Alomar. Heck, Enc is outhitting both of them. I think LoDuca will be gone next year whether we win with him or not. We have a good backup plan in Redmond, Treanor, Castro and Willingham than we do at starting pitching, closer, or anywhere else on the team.

A good back up plan...you realize you named the four people who were here this year...and produced so poorly that we had to make this trade. I don't think that Beinfest gave up Choi to watch all the pieces walk. Lo Duca has been #1 on Beinfest's wish list for a long time, it'll shock the hell out of me if he leaves.

Most of the criticisms against Treanor and Willingham were on defense. When was the last time a rookie catcher came to the majors midseason and performed well? What about with a staff as young as ours and with slow deliveries?

LoDuca is due as much as Penny next year, so didn't we just replace the question of Penny or Pavano with Pavano or LoDuca? Enc signed for next year at $4M doesn't help our position much.

I've thought about this also, and if we were to bring back just Beckett, Burnett Mota, Redmond, Easley, Mordecai, and Pavano along with the guys under contract our payroll would come out around $60 million, and that's for only 13 players. I don't see Loria increasing our payroll much if any over $60 million.

So unless we somehow get rid of Enc's contract and are able to trade Lo Duca for some cheap young players that will contribute next year, I'd say things aren't looking to good.

Remember we have a lot of guys who will be making the major league minimum or close to it that can help: Cabrera, Willis, Aguila, Bump, Castro, Willingham, Treanor, Howard, Spooney, Wayne.

Of course add them all up and that's an addition $4-5 million to pay.

If the big 4 of the pitching staff stays healthy, Cabrera keeps up his pace, and Wayne/Bump and Willingham step up this could be competitive team worthy of winning 81 games. The loss of Lenny Harris and/or Mordy might actually help the bench.
