Next year's payroll could range from: $70.1 million to $83.8 million...

494347

But if we get $10 million backloaded and have it payed in 2006 or beyond, you can have your cake and eat it too.

Here's where we stand now:

SIGNED THROUGH 2005

Castillo 5.33

Conine 4.75

Gonzalez 3.4

Lowell 8

Pierre 3.4

Encarnacion 4

Hampton 11

Pudge 2

41.88

ARBITRATION ELIGIBLE with projected range

Beckett 2-4

Burnett 3-5

LoDuca 5-8

Mota 3-4

Redmond 0-2 (Has service time to be FA, but not listed on any sites as)

FREE AGENTS

Benitez 4-6

Cordero 0-1

Easley 0-1

Fox 0-1

Harris 0-1

Koch 2-4

Mordecai 0-1

Pavano 6-9

Valdez 1-3

494251

To keep everyone on that list the payroll would have to be increased to $74 million...

494329

I see Cordero, Harris, and Koch leaving.

494333

$70 million...

494335

We can try backloading Pavano and LoDuca's deals

494340

ok homer... over $64 million... not a penny less...

494343

It works then DT.

494345

The front office won't go over $60 millon.. other players will have to go...

Let's not make last year's mistake of not resigning key players

494295

I think Beinfest did a really good job last winter. He put together a rather decent team capable of making the playoffs at a limited cost. He kept his emotions out of the negotiations with Pudge and Lee, and replaced them with young players with potential and the ability to contribute now.

Only real mistake was he never addressed the lack of depth, but a small revenue team can not waste money on such a luxury. Took a risk on Oliver but we were still a .500 team and in the playoff hunt while he was starting.

Who knew that Castro would flop? McKeon would use the weak bench much? JP, Luiy, Niner would not play up to their contracts? Or the team couldn't buy a hit with runners in scoring position?

if only it were as easy dood...

Cabrera, Willis, Wayne, Bump and the rest of the will make $4-5 combined. Add that.

I don't see how it can be any more than $65 million.

That leaves $18 million to spend. 22 if we find someone to pay for Enc.

The big factor is actually revenue-sharing.

Depending on where the Fish lineup among MLB teams we either could see an increase above the $23 million received this year or a decline, which could result in several players being jettisoned.

Remember we have a lot of guys who will be making the major league minimum or close to it that can help: Cabrera, Willis, Aguila, Bump, Castro, Willingham, Treanor, Howard, Spooney, Wayne.

Of course add them all up and that's an addition $4-5 million to pay.

If the big 4 of the pitching staff stays healthy, Cabrera keeps up his pace, and Wayne/Bump and Willingham step up this could be competitive team worthy of winning 81 games. The loss of Lenny Harris and/or Mordy might actually help the bench.

494291

I have to think that the marlins will give Cabs and Willis at least a million. Our bullpen will be Mota and pretty much 5 guys making the minimum including spooney. Those 5 will amount to almost 2 million. That's 64 million and we still need a 5th starter and 3 bench players.

The Padres go from vacuuming in money to paying out big time. We could see our share increase by a big amount.

Something I learned a few weeks ago about the CBA:

Small revenue teams like the Marlins have to count their local revenue as a greater percentage than the Yankees or others towards revenue sharing. So in effect attendance increases are really only for show and to fill Huizenga's pockets through concessions and parking.

Here's my 2005 team:

Redmond (1.25), Willingham (.4), Conine (4.75), Castillo (5.33), Lowell (8), Gonzalez (3.4), Pierre (3.4), Cabrera (.7), Aguila (.4), Treanor/Castro (.4), Mordi (.5), cheap outfielder (1.5)

Pavano (7), Burnett (4.5), Beckett (4), Willis (.6), Wayne (.4), Bump (.4)Mota (3.25), Howard (.4), Spooney (.45)

Fill in the bench with other minor leagues and spring training invites.

Total cost + Hampton/Pudge: 64.03

looks serviceable

i like it

Altough I cannot promise the return of all of our key players, I can assure you that this organization will do as much as possible to help attain its key free agents, and acquire anyone that can step in and fill a role left behind by someone lost to another franchise.

Encarnacion 4

if i'm not mistaken, enc makes $5.7 million next year.

obviously he'll be traded, but even then i'm sure we'd have to eat some of it.

Pavano 6-9

judging from freddy garcia's deal, i would think pavano would be looking at somewhere around $10 million per year.

Encarnacion will actually make $4.7 Million next year, and he may be kept. Pavano could command a good $8-9 Million from the Red Sox or Yankees, but don't look to see any Free Agents not named Magglio, Carlos or Nomar exceed $10 Million per next season.

Mark my words Paul Loduca will be our catcher next year. I would not be surprised if Redmond is not on team. Definetely Castro will not be back.

The Marlins FO found out how important a good catcher is they will not make that mistake again.

You are putting to much emphasis on Willingham being a catcher which I doubt very much his future in the major leagues (as long as he hits) is left field or first base.

Then again if the stadium deals does not get done it will not matter because then many other players will be gone including Lowell.

:hat

It will be much easier to grow Willingham into the catcher position in spring training than in the middle of the season.

BP's article suggests that the Marlins owe Encarnacion $2M next year, with the Dodgers picking up the rest. So we could keep Enc if we wanted to under my plan.

Whoever is doing it learned their lesson from earlier this year and is not posting on every single thread. Dead giveaway when that happens.
