August 17, 200422 yr Has any team that is trailing by as many games as the marlins are in the playoff race this late in the season ever made the playoffs, and if so whats the most GB a team has come back from this late in a season?
August 17, 200422 yr its def been done... the Red sox came back from ten down to win the division when it used to be just two divisions and no wild card....4.5 is doable especially because we play the cubs phillies padres and braves so much in the next two months
August 17, 200422 yr very doable. The Fish just need to be the best team in baseball for the rest of the season. They did it last year, Are they up to the challenge?
August 17, 200422 yr Didn't Seattle come back from like 13 games down in September? The famous angels collapse.
August 17, 200422 yr It doesnt matter. The Marlins have to win to go anywhere. I agree that the Marlins will have to be the best team in baseball over the last couple of months here to get it done. Well, as close to the best as they possibly can. The Braves have to fall back to earth and I think right now the Wild Card is really up in the air.
August 17, 200422 yr Author The thing is yes we need to win, but we do not control our own destiny the whole way through. We need to start passing teams and as of now IMO, SF is the strongest of the teams in the hunt.

August 17, 200422 yr They are not a clear favorite. That team has a lot of holes in it, too. Their starting pitching is solid, not unbeatable. And their bullpen has been a problem all season long. You dont run away from those problems and win. It catches up with you. To me, the best team SHOULD be the Padres. But Petco has gotten into the heads of those hitters too much. They are underperforming greatly. But they have solid starting pitching, and it is young too (well, except Wells) and they have a pretty damn good closer in Hoffman (another former Marlin...). Still, I dont see them pulling out ahead anytime soon. The Cubs have a lot more problems than people think. Like I said, Sosa is struggling a lot and the fans here arent happy at all about it. Lee is inconsistent - sure, he has nice numbers but does most of his lifting when it is not needed. Alou and Garciaparra are the only gamers on that team and I dont see them carrying this team and certainly they arent poised to run away with the WC. The Phillies are the Phillies. Basically, if our offense can be consistent and get us leads early, we have a very good shot of winning games down the stretch because of all the teams listed, we have the best bullpen and arguably the best starting staff. Plus, we have been in this position before - there is more pressure trying to win it out than trying to make a comeback. I like our chances. We got em where we want em.

They play SF 3 times, Cubs 6, SD 3, Phi 7 and Atl 6. Its something like that, don't get on me if they is not exactly right, I am working off of memory, but my point is, if they take care of their business, as in beating the teams infront of them, then they are in control of their destiny. They have to just win nearly every series the rest of the year to have a legit shot I think. Get 2 out of 3 the rest of the way, which is about +10 over the rest of the year.
August 17, 200422 yr Are you serious? I don't know the record, but baseball teams have come back from like 10 games out before.
August 17, 200422 yr rather than looking at the teams ahead of us, it's better to look at where we need to be. the fact is that, since the Wild Card started, it has annually gone to a team with somewhere between 90-95 wins. In fact, only 3 Wild-Card teams out of the 18 there have been since 1995 (the 1999 Mets, the 2001 A's, and the 2002 Angels) have won more than 95 games. we are 59-58 right now. to get to 90 wins, we'd have to go 31-14. to get to 95 wins we'd need to go 36-9. if we land anywhere in between those numbers, we will be right in line for the Wild Card. but it's important to remember: 36-9 is what the Cardinals and Braves have been doing over the past couple months. it's very hard to win at that pace. you have to be very good and very lucky. So while it's not impossible. if it's going to happen we need to start making our victories dominant and our losses close, instead of the other way around which is how we're doing things now.
August 18, 200422 yr i forgot what team it was had like a 15 game lead late in the season and fell apart and lost the lead and dident make the playoff's forgot what team cought em...so not much help
