Yahoo! Sports Game Preview

Wayne Franklin was very impressive in his first start of the season. The San Francisco Giants need him to be just as good in his second one as he fills in for injured ace Jason Schmidt.

Franklin and the surging Giants look to remain atop the NL wild-card race when they open a three-game series with the Florida Marlins.

Franklin was solid in a spot start Wednesday, pitching six innings and allowing one run and three hits in a 14-4 rout of Montreal in the second game of a doubleheader. The 30-year-old left-hander retired 12 of 13 batters during one stretch and also had his first career two-RBI game.

Now San Francisco could use another big effort from Franklin, as it can't count on the lift it usually gets from Schmidt for at least one turn through the rotation. Schmidt, one of the major leagues' top starters, was scheduled to go Tuesday, but was pushed back four days due to a sore groin.

Barry Bonds and Kirk Rueter led the Giants to a victory Sunday, as Bonds hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Rueter allowed five hits in seven innings of a 3-1 win over the New York Mets.

Bonds was tired after playing all 12 innings of the Giants' 11-9 loss Saturday, but didn't ask out of the lineup and powered San Francisco to a victory in the three-game series.

``You just have to play,'' Bonds said after hitting his 693rd career homer and 35th of the season to highlight a three-run first inning. ``This is the time you have to step it up and play regardless of how you feel. Being in the race helps. There's a little over a month left and you better dig deep.''

The Giants will face a Marlins club that has won seven of 10, but still trails the Giants by five games for the wild card and first-place Atlanta by 7 1/2 games in the NL East. Florida defeated San Diego 8-3 on Sunday for its second straight win and third in four games.

Carl Pavano pitched six solid innings, homered and had two RBIs as the Marlins completed a nine-game road trip with a 6-3 mark. Florida had lost seven of ll heading into the trip.

``We have a goal to win every series,'' Pavano said. ``We know what we have to do to get back into this and get to where we want to be.''

The Giants are opening a seven-game road trip that also takes them to Atlanta, while the Marlins are beginning a six-game homestand.
