Why is he still here?

Featured Replies

Watching last night's speeches I noticed one thing. The Old Guy sitting away from the main guests of the convention, in a slumped position with an almost depressed look on his face. He was applauded by the speakers and Laura gave this man some really nice comments. Through these compliments the man still was in his hunched position, gave a small barely noticable smile and raised his hand half way in the most pathetic wave, I've ever seen.

Of course I'm talking about Dick Cheney. His precense in the night was barely noticable with Maria and Bush 1 being the main group getting the attention of the guests. As I said, he acknowledged praise with what seemed such an incincere responce.

His speech will be well written because Dick Cheney is a smart man without a shadow of a doubt just as Bush 1 was, just never well liked. However if that same man comes out without the enthusiasm that's expected from a convention speech, it could be the equivalent of Nixon's horrid non verbal delievery performance from The Kennedy Debates. Great speeches will get a good reaction but without the enthusiasm and comfort up there, they rarely go over.

If Cheney shows this weakness, it opens up the gates for Edwards in their debate which as we learned in 2000 are very important.

Now I ask, Why is he still The Nominee as VP. In 2000 his lack of charisma got by because when you have to compare your charisma to Joe Lieberman, you don't have many worries.

I believe his main objective to be The VP Canidate back then was to be the link to the republican glory days and I think some saw that. However, that of course is not going to go over in a re election campaign.

I doubt Republicans want to cast him as the intelligent man as he is because it only provides fuel to those who cry that Cheney is in charge of the country not Bush.

Obviously he has no charisma, His State is a non issue so really why is he still the nominee. You can say Loyalty but I say keeping him on when they had a chance to get away back during The Edwards nomination will be a mistake.

Then again, he could come out and give a good speech :mischief

from what i understand, bush is basically in love with him.

everything i've read suggests that dick cheney runs the show a lot more than any other VP in modern times has....apparently bush relies on him heavily to manage things, and, to this point, it appears he's extremely loyal to him.

that said, i'm still a little surprised cheney is still on the ticket. when polls show bush-giuliani or bush-powell defeating kerry so handily, i can't imagine any politician not copping out and going with the easier alternative.

I felt a lot of tension where Cheney was sitting when the Bush twins spoke. They're almost as dumb as their father but not quite.

Cheney is the shadiest man alive.

Anyway, Bush would have been almost guaranteed a victory if he ran with John McCain instead of Tricky Dick (no, not Nixon).

Again Cheney looked bland when receiving praise from Dubya.

Cheney is the most qualified man out of anybody running for anything.

I can't wait for the VP debate to see DC just absolutely embarrass the unqualified Edwards.

Yeah, that's going to happen in a debate that is more fluff than anything, their's no heated moments really whoever wins that debate is the one who is more cool in the spot and has the better jokes which Cheney did against Lieberman.

Oh I cant wait for the VP debates. Are you kidding me? Edwards is gonna get crushed? You dont know much about Edwards do you? He is by far the best speaker of anyone to run for president this year in my opinion. He is an amazing trial lawyer who has owned juries. You know..juries..made up of normal down home folks. The same people who the debates are gonna be aimed at and who the Republicans say they always win through the debates. Like rune said, the debates have nothing to do with qualifications.

This is what may lead to Edward's downfall in the debates. Underpromise..overachieve. If the epectations of cheney winning are low he needs to just hold his own to be 'win' the debate. If Edwards stutters once he may be seen as the loser. Thats what happened in 2000 w/ bush and gore. THe texan with the speech problem looked good and solid and the man who was expected to be the better debator did nothing spectacular.
