Just off my glove!!!

Featured Replies

There I was in the first row in the 4th inning (I believe it was the 4th, because Pavano started to struggle right after) when a slicing foul ball comes in my direction. It takes one bounce just short of the rain tarp in foul ground. It's coming right at me. In a millisecond I throw one my glove and stretch out. I can see it. It's coming fast. I can get it. I haven't caught or tossed around a baseball in months. Haven't fielded a ball off the hop in a year. Everything is rushing back to me though. I can hear my high school coach telling me to keep my eyes on the ball and follow it into the glove. I can hear my father telling me to calm myself and not to be too anxious and close the glove too early. Coming, coming, coming. The ball and my glove meet. I clearly see the ball hit the webbing of the glove and I squeeze down my thumb as quickly as possible. I can't feel anything. Couldn't feel the ball actually hit the meet although I clearly saw that it did. The vicious sun which baked everyone in attendance is no longer there. Nothing. I immediately turn to face the field and my glove and look inside. The ball's not there. It's bouncing on the ground at a quick but much slower pace further down the leftfield line. The damn thing bounced off the edge of my glove. If I had been only reached out farther... sigh... I slammed my glove down and sunk in my chair.

I feel the start of a Marlins2003-like decade long streak in foul ball futility has started.

RFerry, for your sake I hope not.

I look back on my catches last weekend and my saving grace was that I play ball with my kid almost everyday.

Good luck, your day will come. :thumbup

Why'd you embarrass you're self by telling us. We'd never know.

Thats not so embarrassing. It happens to alot of people. The balls have been thrown in litterally the seat directly in front, behind, and next to me tons of times. I've never caught it "even tho I tried" but I'm not embarressed. I always tell ppl about how close I came to catching one!!! :lol

I caught a foul ball once :) It actually fell out of this guys grasp... but it's mine now! :shifty !

Guys, just go to the bullpen after the game...they give out balls a lot...its not that hard.

I know...but atleast you will be getting a baseball. :)

It's much better to get a baseball by catching one...

I have a lot of baseballs...some I got from players giving them to me and some I caught...the ones I caught I like better... :)

If someone wanted a baseball that badly they could buy one for 9 bucks, just plain getting a baseball has absolutely nothing to do with it. The only balls that have any sort of sentimental value whatsoever are those that you catch by way of a foul ball or home run, having a player throw you a ball or getting one from a ball boy just because you're a little kid doesn't count. If a foul ball comes your way and bounces on the ground and you pick it up, it's still not the same as actually catching it and I wouldn't even keep it unless I caught it.
