MIAMI -- The Marlins' playoff push was dealt a blow Wednesday as the team announced power pitcher A.J. Burnett will not make his Friday start against the Braves due to inflammation in his right elbow.

Exactly when Burnett returns is unclear.

The Arkansas native traveled to Birmingham, Ala., on Wednesday to have his elbow examined by orthopedic surgeon, Dr. James Andrews. An MRI exam revealed inflammation.

On April 29, 2003, Andrews performed Tommy John reconstructive ligament replacement surgery on Burnett's elbow.

The hard-throwing right-hander has made a remarkable comeback, going 7-6 with a 3.74 ERA. According to the radar readings at Pro Player Stadium, Burnett's fastball has touched 100 mph at least twice.

Burnett has won four straight starts and is a big reason why the Marlins have become a serious Wild Card contender. On Sunday, Burnett tossed eight innings, giving up one run on six hits with six strikeouts in an 11-1 win over the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Florida, which is playing the Expos in a doubleheader in Miami on Wednesday, entered the day two games back of the Giants in the Wild Card standings.

In that game, he threw 104 pitches, but experienced some discomfort afterwards. He threw a bullpen session on Tuesday at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago, before the Marlins faced the Expos.

In 19 games, Burnett has tossed 118 innings with 109 strikeouts and 38 walks.

The Marlins have not announced who will fill in on Friday when the Marlins play host to the Braves.

Oh yeah...that'd be smart.

Worst possible thing that could happen.. i have no idea what we're gonna do

Not only has he been a stud for the Marlins, he's also been a stud on my fantasy team. Damn, I hope he only misses that one start.
