Yahoo! Sports Game Preview

The Florida Marlins are running out of time in the National League playoff race.

Josh Beckett hopes to help the Marlins gain ground in the postseason race as they play their final home game of the season against the Philadelphia Phillies.

A playoff berth is a longshot for the defending World Series champions. The Marlins finish the season on the road against Atlanta, Montreal and Philadelphia.

Florida's 12-4 loss to the Phillies on Wednesday dropped it 6 1/2 games behind wild-card leader San Francisco with 11 to play.

``You fight all year to try to control your own destiny,'' center fielder Juan Pierre said. ``But we're not in that position because of the way we played earlier in the year.''

The Marlins were 30-20 on May 31 and leading the NL East by two games, but have gone 49-52 since to fall 9 1/2 games behind Atlanta.

The Marlins expected to have better production from their rotation, especially World Series MVP Beckett, who had three stints on the disabled list and takes a 7-9 record in Thursday's start.

Beckett is 3-4 with a 3.73 ERA in 10 starts since coming off the DL on July 30. He went 9-8 last season, but his superb pitching in the playoffs help earn Florida its second World Series title.

Marlins manager Jack McKeon has been toying with the idea of going with a four-man rotation the rest of the way. Earlier in the week, he said it was a possibility, depending on the Marlins' position in the wild-card standings.

McKeon added Carl Pavano's pursuit of 20 wins and the chance to get Beckett more innings also could play a part.

Philadelphia is a game behind the Marlins in the NL East.

Pat Burrell hit a three-run homer and Eric Milton won for the first time in more than a month to lead the Phillies on Wednesday.

Mike Lieberthal, Jason Michaels and Placido Polanco each added two-run homers in Philadelphia's second win in two nights at Florida after having lost 14 straight at Pro Player Stadium.

we get no hit but win 1-0

And get the single run after JP strikes out but due to a comedy of errors, manages to score on a K + 3 errors. :lol

Pierre

Castillo

Conine

Cabrera

Lowell

Lo Duca

Encarnacion

Gonzalez

Beckett

Finally, Conine hits 3rd... we'll see how he does.

I think Conine hit yesterday. I have been a big proponent of him hitting 3rd all year long. I am selfishly hoping he has a big night. And we need to beat the Phucking Phillies...

Abreu has a great eye - I wonder what his contract status is...I know. He isnt coming here. :mischief

Why does Juan Encarnacion continue to start over Aguila?
