I'm currently taking a jazz class and I am hooked. My favorites are Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, & Ella Fitzgerald.

I'm more of a smooth jazz fan myself. Spyro Gyra, Dave Koz, and Acoustic Alchemy are some of my faves.

I'm also becoming a fan of Vince Guaraldi. The Charlie Brown Suite and Other Favorites is one of my favorite CDs.

I'm an avid jazz fan personally. I stick to classics and stuff on Love 94 (yes, I'm aware not all of it is jazz).

Nope. Not yet.

Miles Davis, Joh Coltrane, T Monk are my faves

I'm not a "fan", but I do listen to NPR on weeknights. Very relaxing -- perfect for falling asleep :thumbup

I guess you could say I'm a bandwagoner :p

Right now I am listening to some 'Ol Blue Eyes. Current song is "Luck Be a Lady Tonight".

Favorite is Miles. No question.

I like Dave Brubeck too. Him and Paul Desmond made a great combo.

John Coltrane played some good stuff, but I'm not a big fan of his late year experimental stuff.

i can agree with that statement about coltrane, i definitley like his earlier work, he was experimenting way too much, kinda almost sounds middle eastern-ish, and yes, Miles is the best

Dave Brubeck is also very good.

And MiRi, you will learn to love and hate freeform jazz. Its annoying and beautiful at the same time.

anything Miles touched was awesome. personally i liked all his earlier Columbia stuff and "The Birth of the Cool" also. i didnt really think id be too into his fusion stages, but ill have to admit now that "In a Silent Way" and "Bitches Brew" are two of my favorite Miles albums, along with "Sketches of Spain", "Round about Midnight", "Porgy and Bess", and the standard "Kind of Blue".

Thelonious Monk is another genius that should be listened to. Charles Mingus, aweome on the stand up bass, isnt given as much credit as he should, but i highly recommend someone pick up "Mingus Ah Um", which i think is his best album. Dave Brubeck is great, though a little more piano infulenced than most. Stan Getz really cool, as he combined jazz and Brazilian samba together. really reall cool. others worth a listen:

John Coltrane

Weather Report

Harry Connick, Jr

Charlie Parker

Sonny Rollins

Jaco Pastorius (alone from Weather Report)

Weather Report is amazing. I have the 8:30 CD live recording. Birdland is absolutely phenomenal on that CD. It is a must have for any jazz fans.

Birdland is definitely a classic.

I am not a big fan of "Birth of the Cool". Kind of Blue and Round About Midnight are my favs of Miles. His laid back cool stuff is just amazing. Plus the Kind of Blue group with Coltrane and Evans is the best group to ever get together IMO.

Other Jazz that I like is the fusion stuff of Herbie Hancock. "Chameleon" and "Watermelon Man" just jam. Awesome stuff.

Watermelon Man :thumbup

good jam.

I'm a big fan of cannonball adderly ... absolutely love his fake live album "mercy, mercy, mercy (live at the club)"

also a big fan of coltrane and monk does well for me

although it isn't so much jazz I love Louis Prima as well

really not that big of a fan of advant garde stuff .. i like mainly bop and hard bop

I saw a latin jazz type group at my all time favorite jazz club (Ortliebs in Philly) ..... if you get the chance and like a little bit of latin beat with your jazz then look up Marlon Simon and the Nagual Spirits .... excellent stuff ... saw them live and have been hooked since

Listening to "Kind of Blue" as we speak. Amazing album, top 5 in music history.

Really am starting to get more into the later avant garde Coltrane stuff. Once you start listening to every little aspect of it you start to get a better appreciation of it. Good stuff.

i'm surprised none of you mentioned anything done in the latin side of jazz, some great stuff there.

some favs of mine are:

irakere (grew up listening to them, they just kick ass)

chucho valdes

arturo sandoval

paquito d'rivera

gonzalo rubalcavar

other favs of mine are monk, coltrane, the duke, miles, mongo santamaria, francisco aguabella and the list goes on.

arturo sandoval

He rules. He also lives in Miami Springs. Isn't or wasn't he a professor at FIU?

By the way, I have to get a live CD and write a review on it. Anyone know of any really good Duke live CDs?
