June 30, 200322 yr I think by now virtually all of us realize Derrick Lee is not going to make the contribution here the team needs from him. When you look at his performance offensively (and BTW I think he is as good if not the best defensive first baseman in the league) and his $ 4.25 million contract, with a final year of arbitration coming up, he has to be at the top of the FO list to jettison. Personally I love the guy at first, he's saved us a ton of runs. But we can't afford his bat in the lineup. Yeah yeah yeah he hit two meaningless homeruns in the series, THE GUY NEEDS A CHANGE OF SCENERY. We need salary relief. If he just crawls through the rest of the season putting up his same numbers we are faced with paying him in the vicinity of $ 6 million+. Having a choice between keeping him and keeping Lowell and Castillo, that $6 Mil goes along way towards saying "Derrick who...?" Banks is hitting over .300 in games started. Is he going to hit 25 homers a year? Not likely. But he'll make better contact, hit more sacrifices when they're needed, in short he'll play a more intelligent offensive first base than Lee. Banks will make the minimum for a second year player next year. It may be someone else, I don't want to get fixated on Banks. The point if we hope to hold onto our second and thirdbasemen we can't afford $ 6 mil at first. It's that simple. The question is - what does it cost to move Lee? I'll leave it to others to find a new home for him but I'm guessing the Marlins would rather pick up a piece of this year's remaining salary rather than stuck with him at season's end. From a PR standpoint, keeping Castillo and Lowell will far outweigh losing Lee. I have to believe that someone out there thinks they can rehabiltate Derrick Lee. My guess is Beinfest et al are hoping the same thing Comments?
June 30, 200322 yr I agree. Lee is great 1b but playing in the pro hurts him. If Beinfest makes other GMs understand this he will get a nice package for Lee.
June 30, 200322 yr Author Before you start seeing stars in your eyes consider this - Derrick Lee (USA TODAY player database) has the 2nd lowest BA of all major league first basemen. Surprised? Surpised me too. We're not going to get much for Lee if anything. If we could get someone to eat the rest of his salary for this year I think we'd be coming out ahead. Some guys work out, some don't. He hasn't and doubt he ever will here.

June 30, 200322 yr imagine if D Lee played at fenway...all those 400 feet fly outs would be homers or off the wall....his numbers would be significantly bigger at other parks and i bet he would do well, i would like it if he did do well too...but he is not the answer here, i dont think, unless he becomes a pull hitter....he is done as a marlin.
June 30, 200322 yr Enjoyed the thoughtful comments. As a D. Lee fan, I find myself impatient now waiting for his customary second-half rally. I'm sure if we had our pitchers healthy and in there (!), I wouldn't be so impatient. Now, including dollars (and sense) I think Banks can cover 1B. I'd still like to see Stratton there in September. But the only Two Issues Now are protecting Lowell and getting pitching help. If thatmeans packaging Lee with others, then so be it.
June 30, 200322 yr Author They can't wait for Derick to live up to his "potential". Freeing up that salary has to be paramount in the FO. I'm taking the FO at their word that they'll reward overachievers and dump underachievers and Derrick has to be counted in the latter. Dumping, Lee, Hollandsworth and Penny, and maybe AJ could free up $10 -12 million for 2004. In case you're interested here's the Marlins 2003 salaries for 2003. It's a from that terrific baseball database at USAToday. Marlins 2003 salaries
June 30, 200322 yr I say trade Lee, Castillo and Penny before the trading deadline, they are not contributing much right now. Luis has done some stuff at the bat and with the glove, from time to time but nothing noteworthy. My dream trade...Castillo (Kent is injured) and Penny for Biggio (who can play 2B) and Dotel. Too much $$$$$ probably, but that would make us contenders.
June 30, 200322 yr Astros politely decline I know, but i can dream cna't I What are some possibilities for this doomed triumvirate?
June 30, 200322 yr if we make a trade with cinnci and pick up one of their 100 OF's, they would have to start, would cabs go back down or stay on bench, keep in mind hollandsworth will prob be gone as part of a package.......?
June 30, 200322 yr why is Castillo in this doomed group? Because in all likelyhood he will not be with the Fish past July 31st.
June 30, 200322 yr why is Castillo in this doomed group? cause luis' gotta go so we can keep lowell...
June 30, 200322 yr who knows..... if we could somehow get Dunn, he could play 1st, if we drop DLee in another deal but if we get Guillen or someone, Cabs would go back down
June 30, 200322 yr We really don't need another OF, we need a 2B and some bullpen guys. i think we do, cabs cant do it this year, we need production out of left

June 30, 200322 yr We have Banks and Cabs to play Left. We need a 2B before an OF in order to replace Louis if he is traded.
June 30, 200322 yr We have Banks and Cabs to play Left. We need a 2B before an OF in order to replace Louis if he is traded. you can also say that we have fox to play 2nd, im more comfortable putting in fox and getting an OF, than platooning cabs and banks while picking up a light hitting 2B
