June 30, 200323 yr haha, me too.....hey, if we aren't contending before the ASB, you think lowell will be gone? or is he locked in?
June 30, 200323 yr locked in. i hope you're right, if not id be doing a whole lot of :banghead and maybe some :chair followed by a series of :killthemall then when all is done, i would calm down with some nice :cheers and a whole lot of :rasta .................
June 30, 200323 yr if we could somehow get Dunn, he could play 1st, if we drop DLee in another deal I've suggested that before... Trade Castillo/Penny for Dunn. put him at 1B, and trade Lee for pitching...

June 30, 200323 yr Author I do not, for the life of me, understand this zealous drive to trade Luis. The guy is hitting over .300, he's one heck of a "smart" ballplayer and I'll take his glove at 2nd base over most. He goes about his business every game in a professional manner, and most of all he cares. Dumping Lee should make the math work to keep Lowell AND Castillo.

June 30, 200323 yr Do you know any lefty 2B who can hit? :lol Todd Walker Listen people, I'm in no way a math whiz or a wanna-be GM, but I've looked at the salaries and the projected salaries for next year, and there's really no way I can come up with for this team to keep 2 of the 3 players (Lee, Lowell, Luis) unless a ton of other things happen, like the pitching staff gets shaken up, or the team payroll goes up. I can write a long post about all the numbers but I'm sure I'd bore the hell out of everyone.

Lee will make roughly $ 6 million next year, Lowell will get approximately a $ 3.5 mil increase (from $3.5 to $7 mil). Castillo makes $ 4.8, he's not going to get much more than $6 mil anywhere else next year and more importantly, he desperately wants to stay in South Florida. Subtract $6 mil (in 2004 salary dollars) for Lee, add in $ 3.5 for Lowell and $ 1.2 for Castillo, that's $ 4.7, so you actually have a net savings of $1.3 million. That's why I originally said it might be worth it to pay a million bucks of Lee's salary this year to get him out of here.

June 30, 200323 yr Author The "tough part" is finding someone willing to take Lee. The Marlins obviously want to get as much as they can for him, whether it be prospects, an older quality player in the twilight of his career, or someone about to go the free agent route that can provide leadership and either quality innings or a hot bat for the summer. The only other option would be to keep Lee through the season and then not offer him arbitration and cut him loose without compensation in the off-season.
June 30, 200323 yr Marlins2003, that part of the equation is fine, the problem I have is when you factor all the other raises coming to the team next season. Alex will go from 2 to at least 3 Penny will go from 2 to 3 Redman will go from 2 to 3 Pierre goes from 1 to 2 Encarnacion could jump 2 million Hampton's money goes up 1 million Looper could jump at least 1 million even Pavano maybe 1 million that's already a 9 million increase, and it could be worse. They'd really have to thin out the pitching staff to afford Lowell AND Castillo. Maybe Penny and/or Pavano and replace them with kids. As much as I love Luis it's hard to justify paying 7 million for a leadoff hitter on a cash-strapped team. I'd love to see them come up with some creative way to do it though. Unless Loria raises the payroll at least several million, it's gonna be tough.
June 30, 200323 yr that part of the equation is fine Marlins2003, but the problem I see is when you factor all the other raises coming to the team next season... June 30, 200323 yr That really bothers me when the FO said they were able to find "special money" to sign Pudge too. Kinda backs them into a corner now when you can say, "wait, so you can find $10 million of special money to sign Pudge, but you can't come up with 3 million of 'special money' to keep Mike Lowell who is possibly the most special thing that's ever happened to this team?" :mischief2

Time will tell who's right. This is probably Burnett and Penny's last year with the team. So my theory is that they along with Lee, are the three leaving the Marlins before next season, not Castillo and Lowell. Between them they represent probably close to $10 mil in 2004 salary.
