Posted July 1, 200321 yr D. Lee is a notorious late starter. Not that his 2nd half numbers are hall of fame worthy, but they usually surpass those compiled before the ASB. If Lee were able to get going earlier and have the same numbers early in the season as he does late he would be a pretty good middle of the line up guy. I think one way to get him going earlier is having him play winter ball. The Marlins should send D. Lee to Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic or Venezuela during the winter so he can have an early start and can put better numbers early in the season. What do you guys think?
July 1, 200321 yr its true that Lee prob wont be here next year....but what you say makes sense, i like Lee and hope he does well wherever he goes....unless he plays us....the winter ball thing would probablly help a lot
July 1, 200321 yr I don't know if he would agree to it. I get the feeling that players who have been around for a while don't think they need to go back & play winter ball unless they're really struggling... Hey, couldn't hurt though.

Hey, couldn't hurt though. and if they really think about it, it can't be any bad. they get paid to go play in the beautiful caribbean. they take it easy in trainning, just show up for the games and noone will complain. it is all about staying busy during winter, keep playing so you don't get rusty.
July 1, 200321 yr No way they let a multi-mil starter screw around with winter ball unless it's rehab or something. I've got the best solution for D. Lee's slow starts...... Trade his worthless a** to some sucker GM.
July 1, 200321 yr Actually any GM that picks up Lee isn't a sucker, but the oppisite. In any other park in baseball, Lee hits 30-40 HR's every year. Look at the home compared to thr road for him. Imagine if he had as many HR's at home as the road. I think he would have 26 right now...

Imagine if he had as many HR's at home as the road. I think he would have 26 right now... Sorry, but I think where he hits is irrelevant...It's when he hits.... Lee's offensive numbers, including HR's, are bloated. He pads his stats as the season gets longer. In July and August when the team is out of it he heats up, and in September when he faces call-ups due to injuries or the expanded roster he lights it up. I don't care if he plays his home games in a shoebox, his early season numbers are embarrassing.
July 1, 200321 yr Both Wild and Fish are correct. Any GM trading quality for Derrick Lee is taking a big gamble. Derrick's problem is in part the deep fences in PP but his big problem has been his inability to hit in the clutch. Marlins fans aren't complaing about his 16 HRs or glove, he just hasn't been there when called on to win a game or extend a rally. He and Penny have to be the two most available players right now. With Byrd out for the season in Atlanta, it will be interesting to see if Jason Marquis gets the callup.
July 1, 200321 yr Castillo and Penny are most available... And where he plays is very relivant! What if Lowell played in Minute maid his whole career? He would have hit 30 HR's every year. Same with Boston... Lee isn't much of a risk if a contender with a small park is the recipient... For us, usually his late season heat-up is not helpful, but on a team that slows down later on that is in a playoff race he is extreamely helpful...
July 1, 200321 yr He and Penny have to be the two most available players right now Amen to that.  I think Penny and Lee are especially marketable right now, as Beinfest may try to trade them a couple of weeks before the deadline to aquire some talent that he can turn around and include in subsequent trades involving Catillo, Lowell, whoever.
July 1, 200321 yr Lee isn't going to be very available. he will be, but not as available as Luis and Brad.

So you are saying that Lowell would be at 30 or 40 right now if he played in MM park? Sorry, it wouldn't be that much of an increase. And D. Lee's whiffs in the clutch are whiffs no matter whether he's in Miami, Houston or Antartica. Fact is that contenders don't look at Lee and think he's the final piece of the puzzle that will help them for a play-off run. They see him for what is still his biggest upside, "potential". Moreover, his lack of consistent and timely offensive production is even more embarrassing because he's at 1B, where offensive production is crucial and defense is secondary. All in all, if you are a contender looking for a 1b, you look for clutch power hitting, and Lee definitely doesn't fit that bill.
July 1, 200321 yr BUT, most teams don't get clutch power hitting from 3B, and we do, which makes up for it at 1B.
July 1, 200321 yr if DLee lears how to pull the ball(last night) he will be up there with Lowell in homers................ STOP GOING DEAD CENTER
July 1, 200321 yr Apples and oranges...... Are you trying to say that b/c we have a great 3B right now that it justifies watching D. Lee suck like a Hoover? D. Lee had been given a free ride this season, hiding in a line-up that turned suprisingly effective after McKeon took over. Now that production is slowing down every now and again Lee's deficiencies are coming to the surface. If the Marlins want to contend, they have to have timely hitting from their 1B, especially come August when every game counts. And I haven't seen anything that tells me Lee can hit in the clutch when counts, whether it be April, June or August.

The past 3 seasons show him to be very solid in 'close and late' situations. Not that there's such thing as 'clutch hitters' anyway.
July 1, 200321 yr man screw this and f*** that..... Lee is the Man he has been hot past 4 games and all you people wanan do is rag on the man!!!!! he is a late Starter and he is doing it again this year he is very Valueable as 4 him not cominn back next year man if we get this wild card or fall like 1 game below it and cant even make the playoffs i cant see why this team would not still be in tact 4 next year!!!!!
