July 3, 200323 yr Author This was the last financing plan. "The team, the city of Miami, the county, and the state and baseball fans would pay for the new ballpark. The Marlins would be required to pay $6 million a year for 40 years. The county would kick in $118 million derived from an existing hotel tax. Fans would pay a 4 percent surcharge on all tickets. The city of Miami would contribute $2 million a year. The state Legislature would add $122 million through a rebate of an existing tax. As part of the deal, the Marlins agreed to change their name to the Miami Marlins and pay the county $6 million a year for 40 years to play in the stadium. In exchange, the county pledged hotel tax money to build the ballpark." I'd rather have the tax rebate from the state than issue bonds, but will the state cut them to rebate? A tax rebate pends the state's budget, which even though having problems, doesn't cost the state money. The state gets the Marlins taxes and rebates the money they don't use. :mischief2 Bush being a republican will like a tax rebate instead of bonds.
July 3, 200323 yr Author I hope they don't but the Angels did it in order to get money from Anaheim, so it may be useful in that sense. That is Alex Penelas' pet peeve, he wants it to be the Miami Marlins.

I still find that as a really stupid request. What wrong with the name Florida Marlins? Anyways even if they're renamed they'll be also known as the Florida Marlins.

July 3, 200323 yr Author I would like to keep it Florida, but I want to have the team in South Florida whether it be with the Miami or Florida name.
July 3, 200323 yr Author Has there been any news on the ballpark this season other than the few articles in the Herald?

NO BODY in the FO is talking about a PARK..... when Loria STeps up than get Happy Till than just think postive about the next 9 games Not true, the front office has talked to local government about a new ballpark. We need to talk about this, if we want to continue to survive as a franchise and to prosper, we need to get some future drawn out for us. The lack of a detailed future keeps many fans away from our team. It's a chicken and egg problem...ownership needed the new ballpark to win and we needed wins in order to build the ballpark. Loris has given us a pretty good team that is winning, we need to start talking about a ballpark.

July 3, 200323 yr Author DT, Orlando isn't a realistic option. It is too close to Tampa Bay and has not proven twice to MLB commitees (1993 Expansion and 1998 Expansion) that it could support a team. BTW, aren't you losing you minor league team next year?

July 3, 200323 yr Author Seattle had the same problem we have in the early 90's. No money, fan support, bad ballpark, and threats of being folded/moved. But they were able to start playing better on the field and the ownership (nintendo) raised the payroll. Then the people of seattle voted to build a new ballpark and that gave the team the money to raise the payroll to current levels. We have the first ingredient...success on the field. We have an owner who is willing to spend money down here. We need to put it before the voters (who will approve it) and the money from the new ballpark will help us keep on winning. We have talent, we need the money to keep it.
July 3, 200323 yr I'm Boca-Biased on this one, but I think you have to build it in Fort Lauderdale to attract fans from both North and South. That and because the original theory that the hispanic fans of Miami would come out to see the games at Pro Robbie hasn't drawn flies. Further, it's gotta be in a downtown enviroment, where you can incorporate ancillary activities with the game. Forget building it in the Swamp in Sunrise, there is nothing to do out there except go to the game...Unless you are a Senior Citizen looking for a good discount on some shoes. Fish, perfect answer, couldn't agree more...
July 3, 200323 yr Author a downtown area is the ideal, but our local downtown areas aren't very well kept. They would have to be scrubbed down of crime and make them family friendly.

July 3, 200323 yr Author what about if we developed an area that had the ballpark and the other stuff that makes other ballparks successful? Like a ballpark village? It would be near highways and mass transit, but have the feel of a downtown, with office buildings? I heard that the dadeland developers had space for a ballpark in thier plans? Mass transit goes down there, but it is very far for people north of hialeah to get to. If you haven't seen the plans for "downtown" dadeland, they are very nice and will be done by 2008 i believe.
July 3, 200323 yr They supposidly have a downtown area of Ft. Lauderdale already picked out. I forget where, but it was great. I would go to sooooo many more games if it were in Ft. Lauderdale, Boca (especially) or Palm Beach. I remember when the idea came ip Henry wanted in one of those three cities, including Miami too... He had a lot in PB picked out, downtown in FT., and either on the Blue Lake/IBM/T-Rex property in Boca or an open space in West Boca... But if we have a stadium built, I see it in Bicentenial Park. i want it in Ft., but that is really the perfect location, lot, everything for it. And if I recall correctly, if anyone pulled it well enough to LF in the park they had designed there, it would be into "Lowell Land" or better known as the the Miami River.
