Creationism in high schools?

Featured Replies

I think it's wrong for evolution to be presented as the absolute truth. But I can't say creation should be taught either.

I think both sides should be discussed and the teachers should say, "You decide."

if it's taught in a religion class, then sure, i have no problem with it.

if it's taught in a biology classroom .... we've got big problems.

this is how I feel about it. In that district in Wisconsin it will be taught in Biology but it has no scientific basis.

damn.

as far as i'm concerned, it shouldn't even be mentioned in a science class...that's absurd. science doesn't believe in creationism; if anything, it actively debunks it.

I believe science classes should show major theories. These are the two major theories and should be presented as such.

I have to say no just because it's a matter of faith.

I do feel Kids need to know about it but considering Relegion's popularity, I doubt not being taught about it in school will cease a kid from learning of it.

I do also feel that a book or teacher should never go out of the way to try to disprove it or belittle the idea.

How can you teach something that you can't prove?

My Science Teacher introduced evolution best when he simply said "Their have been many debates over this issues, some choose to believe Evolution, some rather choose faith. Inform yourself and make the decesion that best fits you"

If you teach one as widely accepted, then teach the other widely accepted one too.

Should we be teaching seas parting in two to free a people as well? Faith should not be taught.

My thoughts exactly.

I think that's probably the way to do it. :thumbup

Isn't the Big Bang a scientific theory? Just teach that, kids can connect the dots on their own.

creationism shouldn't be taught in science, but evolution should be taught as THEORY and not FACT...it's not proven.

Personally....well, I'm not going to get into it, but I'm fundamental Baptist....

but that doesn't discredit the fact that evolution, big bang, etc. are theories....and not TRUTH!

Well that's semantics really. You can't call evolution a fact because there's always new data and evidence in the future that will further shape the theory. It's taught in science because in general it's the most widely accepted model out there right now by scientists.

Science doesn't really deal in absolute truths. No scientific model can ever reach "the truth", since no one will ever possess knowledge of ALL facts and data. As long as we do not have complete knowledge, scientific models are considered tentative, and valid only within the current limits of what we know.

As scientists produce new data and formulate new theories and hypotheses, a consensus is reached about which theories are better suited to the data and which have a higher degree of confidence. In this manner, the model is constantly being modified, improved and expanded in order to encompass more and more data. Scientific models can never be stagnant--they are constantly changing and expanding as our knowledge of the universe increases.

creationism shouldn't be taught in science, but evolution should be taught as THEORY and not FACT...it's not proven.

Gravity is a theory, do you propose we stop teaching that?

Gravity in itself isnt a theory. There are gravitational theories that affect how strong the pull is, or any fluctuations that may occur over time, but the existence of gravity itself is as close as you get to fact. Big Bang has several details to try to prove the theory, but gravity seems to have been proven. Anyway the point is creationism should be taught in philosophy classes. And to bring up another point, i dont see why creationism isnt comaptible with evolution. If you think about it, evolution does not disprove the existence of a higher being, god created a mitochondrian that later evolved into a single celled organism that evolved into an amoeba and so forth

I believe science classes should show major theories. These are the two major theories and should be presented as such.

Creationism is not a theory. For something to be called a theory means that it actually has gone through the scientific method, you know, experimenting, measurment, re-testing, remeasuring, peer review, etc. - which creationism has never done.

And to bring up another point, i dont see why creationism isnt comaptible with evolution. If you think about it, evolution does not disprove the existence of a higher being, god created a mitochondrian that later evolved into a single celled organism that evolved into an amoeba and so forth

That would be the case, if you completely ignore what the Bible says.

The bible never says 'this is the way it is theres no variations and anything that isnt in this story is defintely false' Thats been an interpretation taken by religious leaders not by biblical writers themselves. When i was taught the bible we always learned about creationism and the creation STORY. It was just to show that god created the world but was not to be taken literally, the underlying fact was god created the world and man is born with sin

Well, I went to a christian chool growing up and I was taught both theories of evolution and creation. Neither was taught as the truth and I think thats how it should be. I think thats how schools should do it. If a christian school can teach both why the hell can't public schools.

That's an "interpretation". That's not what the Bible says. The Bible specifically says how the world was created, and it's inconsistent with evolution.

Because public schools aren't here to teach religion. That's what religious schools and Sunday school are for.

I went to a Jesuit High School, and we learned Creationism in Theology, Evolution in Science (neither taught as absolute truth), and both in Philosophy.
