Comment on ESPNEWS about Lowell and Glaus

They said: "Sabermetrically, he's closer to a Mike Lowell than a Scott Rolen. Arizona is shooting the locks off the wallet."

What the hell is that supposed to mean?

Mike Lowell disappeared in the second half of last year, bringing down his total stats

Yeah, that's something he's gonna need to work on. His numbers dropped dramatically in the 2nd half last season.

Sabermatrics is the way Billy Beane and a bunch of other people are beginning to look at baseball. Basically its a bunch of mathmatical equations.

The people who think the Dodgers robbed the Marlins last year were the Sabermatric people. Because I think Choi was our #3 Sabermatric hitter and Enc was dead last in the league.

Basically it looks at productive outs, bumber of fly ball outs and ground ball outs.

If you are really intrested in it read "Money Ball".

That they overpaid.

Lowell needs the cream and the clean to be able to recover better and minimize physical breakdown during the 2nd half of the season,

I know that. It's not "they are beginning to look at baseball....". This stuff has been floating around for 25+ years. It's just the last several years that mainstream fans and FO people are beginning to pay attention to it.

I agree - evaluation by stats is nothing new. This is a system that has been becoming more mainstream because of a book like Moneyball. And also because of that, more people are adopting it as a way to build a team. It seems cyclical. I think that a player is more than his stats...but that is just me I suppose.

I think Glaus is a pretty solid addition for DBacks. He and Sexson demand respect at the heart of that order. Looks like that will keep the Unit around too.

And Lowell is still among the elite 3B in the game.

I agree, they are saying that the dbacks overspent for glaus. lowell has dropped off the past three years. The WS year he got hurt and had a good post season but he needs to improve his indurance. It also would be nice to keep lowell and loduca fresh by having willingham get 350 - 400 ab's at catcher and 3b. I am not sure how major league ready willingham is defensively at catcher.

Willingham will never be a great defensive catcher, but we don't play him at catcher because of his defense, we do it becaue that is one of the only places we can get his bat in.

It just seemed like Lowell was always in a slump all of last season excluding the first month or so.

I think you mean after May because he hit .373 in May. In June he hit .236 And the rest of the year he hit around .250.

This is another thing. Seems to me the Marlins went as far as Lowell took them. They lead the divison up through May, had their lead, and lost it through June. I guess for those who think the Marlins as is offense will be feasible are assuming Lowell will have .373 months through the year.

I think people are misunderstanding the newness of SABRmetrics. True, it has been around for quite a while. However, it was never implented on a full scale by a General Manager until Billy Beane took over the position in Oakland.

Yes, absent another big bat in the lineup, we need Lowell to have a huge year (say 35 HR and 120 RBI) or Lowell to have a great year (25-30 HR and 100-110 RBI) and someone else to step up also (like Conine driving in 100 or Lo Duca driving in 90-95). That's why we need to upgrade our offense. I think if we're in it by the end of the trading deadline we'll get someone good to fill our offensive need. The only way I see us having a great year all year next year is if a number of our starters have career years or go back to 2003 type production - for example of Luis goes back up to .315 average and Encarnacion drives in 95 runs. The talent is there, but they have to have good years. If we can add another bat before the year starts, then we can be in very good shape.

If they do this it would be best to play cabrera at 3b and willingham in LF

They should have groomed Willingham as a 1b he be more useful to the team there

I think they are hoping Stokes is the 1B of the future still, if he ever figures out how to get his wrists healthy.

Other than Cabrera, who else did they have on the team that could mash the ball? When you've only got 2 dangerous hitters in the lineup and 1 of them goes down, the offense is going to struggle.

I think you mean after? May because he hit .373 in May.? In June he hit .236 And the rest of the year he hit around .250.

We need to make the moves now and stop selling our farm come deadline time. We need to have a complete team now, so that if anything at the deadline we just get a couple of pieces here and there that wont cost all our proespects
