December 11, 200421 yr link Pro Player to evict Marlins after 2010 BY BARRY JACKSON bjackson@herald.com Pro Player Stadium, owned by Dolphins and former Marlins owner Wayne Huizenga, has informed the Marlins they will not be permitted to use the facility after the 2010 season, an official close to stadium management told The Herald Friday. The surprising twist adds even more urgency to the Marlins' attempts to resolve their longterm future, an issue at the forefront in recent days with news that team officials met this week with Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman, who is courting a team. Pro Player Stadium President Bruce Schulze confirmed the Marlins will be bounced after 2010, the last of a series of one-year lease options for the team, and said the move will allow the facility to pursue other events such as cricket and soccer. Marlins president David Samson confirmed receiving the letter, dated Nov. 16, but has not yet responded. He said he was not surprised or angered. ''The owner is free to do what he chooses,'' Samson said. ``What this does is make it very clear the need for the Marlins to have a new place to play is no longer just about economics. It's about survival.'' Schulze said PPS is unable to acquire some events because of problems created by the infield dirt during baseball season. He said the fact the Dolphins have had problems kicking field goals off the dirt was not a factor in the decision to eventually cut ties with the Marlins. ''Longterm, there are many things we can do that wouldn't conflict with baseball,'' Schulze said. ``The dirt is a big operational issue to deal with. The management of the dirt ends up problematic for other events, such as international soccer matches. Those events shy away because they don't want dirt on their fields.'' Not surprising, really. Maybe this will help the new stadium effort, since now the local/state politicians will see the Marlins absolutely have to be in a new stadium by 2010, and that stadium will be in Miami or in another state. I think it's pretty funny, too, that the Marlins are being evicted in order to allow the extremely popular sports in South Florida of cricket and soccer to move in.

The meeting with Vegas could be a contingency plan that, if the Marlins don't have new South Florida housing by 2010, they'd be allowed to move to Vegas or elsewhere. After all, they'd have no home here to play, so MLB would almost have to give them permission to play elsewhere.

The plan was to sign the deal in October after the World Series or in November. But the negotiations have gone longer than both parties expected. I never said it was a done deal. If you read closely I said "very good news" never "it's a done deal" I find it rather stupid that you start quoting me from stuff I said 8 months ago. Florida has a team, I think they were the Lightning, Thunder or one of those types of names.
