Report: Renteria agrees to sign with Red Sox

BOSTON (AP) -- All-Star shortstop Edgar Renteria told The Boston Globe he has agreed to a $40 million, four-year contract with the Red Sox, the paper reported on its Web site Wednesday.

Renteria, who played for St. Louis for the past six years, made the final out in Boston's World Series sweep of the Cardinals. He has a .289 career average and is a four-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner.

Reached by the paper at his home in Colombia, Renteria said the World Series champions made the best offer.

``I like to play on a winning team like Boston, St. Louis or any team that has the opportunity to win,'' he was quoted as saying. His decision came down to the two pennant winners, and he said the Red Sox were ``more interested in my playing for them.''

Renteria replaces fellow Colombian Orlando Cabrera, who was acquired in a late-season trade and played a key role in Boston's championship run.

His contract also includes an option for 2009.

Renteria agrees to 4-year, $40m deal with Sox

BARRANQUILLA, Colombia -- Edgar Renteria has agreed to a four-year $40 million contract with the Red Sox today, giving Boston an All-Star shortstop.

"The biggest reason was that Boston is a traditional team," Renteria said poolside from his home in Colombia. "They won the Series this year and I like to play on a winning team like Boston, St. Louis or any team that has the opportunity to win."

Renteria, who played for St. Louis last season, is a 4-time All-Star, 2-time Gold Glove winner. He has a career average of .289.

St. Louis lost to Boston in four games in the World Series, and Renteria made the last out, grounding out to Keith Foulke. "I played with them for six years but finally we didn't come to an accord."

A nine-year veteran, Renteria was one of the prime free agents on the market. His decision came down to Boston and St. Louis. "It (Boston's offer) was more generous. They were more interested in my playing for them."

The Red Sox offer also includes an option for a fifth year.

(Bye Bye Edgar :( .. Gotta go get Cabrera now.. *Sigh* )

Stealing everyone from their ex teams..

See Yanks and Sox..

That's what baseball wants.. :mad :

Unliek the orioles, and mariners, and the 15 other teams who have signed people this year.

It isnt our faults that the ownership puts money back into the team to get a winning product. Go bitch to your management if it isnt fair to you.

for the evil empires on the eastern shore assemble all star teams.

Another very mature discussion with Das.

Never wrong, never will be.

I actually like it when the Sawks, Yanks, Mariners, etc spend in the offseason

even though it makes me bitter

whats funny and yet ironic is when red sox fans complain about the yankees signing players.

kinda like last winter.

i'm sure the same would happen if the unit goes to the bronx.

I like the Yanks/Sox rivalry as of late when it comes to spending.

The Tigers offered Renteria the same amount. I guess Boston is more of an attractive place than Detroit.

Teams with success have more of a shot at free agents. The Tigers matched Pavano's offer as well, but he signed with New York anyways.

oh its fun.

dont forget the mets...who just spend money like dumbasses every year.

I hate it and I think its one of the worst things happening in baseball, but to each their own.

And yes, I get bitter also.

No, I just think there should be some limit on spending. A 300 million pay roll is absurd and not good for the game.

But then again, the more money the Yankees have spent the less they have won. When they have been dominant is when they built a "team".

So let them spend. Just more costly heartache.

As despicable as the Red Sox and Yankees are, I wish the Marlins were in a similar economic situation.

Stop the money spending hating. It's old and so 2003. You all know that if your team would spend the money, you'd be 100% behind them.
