December 21, 200421 yr The AP poll has pulled out of the formula according to Boston Globe! Just saw it on ESPNEWS!
December 21, 200421 yr The end? No, it just got better. There is no need to have the media in it. Just have the coaches, the computers, and the records.
December 21, 200421 yr um no...the Associated PRESS is the Media poll the Coaches Poll is the ESPN/USA Today/Coaches Poll....so it's coaches, USA Today, and ESPN....I assume more than just the coaches vote in that poll, so the media will still have an influence even without the AP poll.
December 21, 200421 yr They are out of the equation, but isn't the whole thing just decided by some committiee now? I am sure the committiee will take the AP polls into consideration anyway. The AP just can say "Its now our fault".
December 22, 200421 yr Why did they pull out? Now they're essentially irrelevant. 640133 largely due to what happened last year with usc and now this year with cal.
December 22, 200421 yr they arent irrelevant....they can claim their National Champion just like the BCS can. The BCS is not the authority. There really is never a true National Champion (for there to be a champion, a tournament or playoff must be instilled...that's why some may have heard it called the "mythical National Champion"). Any poll can claim a National Champion. In 1984, the Gators were the NC according to the NY Times. The AP can claim their NC just like the BCS. Frankly, I might even give more respect to a poll than to a bunch of computers. There will never be a true national champion until there is a playoff. That is a national champion by definition.
December 22, 200421 yr Unless only one team remains undefeated that was highly ranked such as Ohio State in 2002.
December 22, 200421 yr it's still a mythical NC because it is based on voting. It's obvious that OSU deserved it, but technically it is not a NC because it is not finished in a playoff. Although, one could make the argument that if Miami and OSU were the only undefeated teams, and they played each other, then it was a playoff of sorts...and OSU would then be considered the National Champion. But that's stretching it. Oh well...in the meantime, the SEARS Trophy goes to the MNC.

December 22, 200421 yr good....the more I thought about it, the more I was afraid that the Coaches Poll had been tainted by ink jockeys.
December 22, 200421 yr they just need to go back to the old system. 640340 Great so you'd have USC in the Rose, Auburn in the Sugar and Oklahoma in the Fiesta. If all three won what would you get then? At least this way you get 1 champion.
December 22, 200421 yr no they need a playoff....like every level of football and every level of every other team sport. High school football: playoff NAIA football: playoff NCAA D-III football: playoff NCAA D-II football: playoff NCAA D-1AA football: playoff NCAA D-1A football: effed up system Arena Football League: playoff National Football League: playoff All levels of NCAA basketball: playoff NBA: playoff All levels of NCAA baseball: playoff MLB: playoff All levels of NCAA hockey: playoff NHL: playoff yah, there's something wrong...no other sport or level of football has to argue over who the champion is.
December 22, 200421 yr The ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll is a bunch of crap. I heard that for last season guys like Urban Meyer, Ty Willingham and Ron Zook didn't have votes in the coaches poll. So who the hell are the coaches that are voting if those 3 teams didn't get to vote?
December 22, 200421 yr theres some sort of rule about coaching experience. I dont know the specifics, but it's something like a coach must have 3 years of head coaching experience before he can vote (which is why Zook couldn't). Maybe it's more years, or something I don't know. In theory, the coaches poll is great....who knows football better than the coaches? No one. Unfortunately, the coaches only know the teams they play. There's no way Bobby Bowden can vote correctly on Boise State and Utah, because he hasnt seen them play (maybe he saw Utah on game film)...he's trying to win games, he can't concentrate on putting together an accurate vote for the polls.
December 22, 200421 yr But coaches can be biased. If Miami and Fsu each have a loss, which team do you think a Bowden would vote ahead of the other each time?
December 22, 200421 yr But coaches can be biased. If Miami and Fsu each have a loss, which team do you think a Bowden would vote ahead of the other each time? 640729 yet another problem with coaches voting. It's tough for a coach to leave his bias out of the picture. It's also tough for a coach to get a good look at all the teams (they're busy concentrating on their own season). too many problems....that's why coaches and media polls should both be used (along with some computer polls, strength of schedule, etc.) in a SELECTION COMMITTEE into a 16 TEAM PLAYOFF.

December 23, 200421 yr who said it was a great system? Everyone: READ MY WHOLE POST! I said it was a great system in THEORY because the people that understand the game of football best are the coaches. Then I proceed to explain WHY IT IS NOT A GREAT SYSTEM. children
December 23, 200421 yr good....the more I thought about it, the more I was afraid that the Coaches Poll had been tainted by ink jockeys. 640335 I was more of referring to that. I'd prefer AP writers voting over coaches, since they have 0 connection to teams as far as being conference buddies and such go. Plus their votes are public, unlike the coaches.
