Why stop at just Urbina and get a BIGTIME BAT?

Featured Replies

First off I think its a BIG mistake that McKeon is starting Willis today. The Expos as you see hit left-handed pitching very well. Beckett should have started. Remember the only time Willis has lost is against the Expos when he didn't even make to the 4IN ala Redman yesterday. Just something to keep in mind.

If the Marlins are so inclined to make a push at the playoffs then go out and get a BIG BAT and I for one think if your going to make a run a 20yr OF isn't going to cut it. here's a few names

* Reds OF Jose Gullien, I think the Reds will move him before the deadline. The only thing is now they want ready ML, while later they may take prospects WHY would they trade the top hitter? one his a free agent at season end, two Kearns/ Dunn/Griffey are the cornerstone of that OF. Plus they have a young power hitting OF in Smitherson in AA.

*Royals OF Carlos Beltran, YES I know the Royals are still in it BUT he is a free agent at season's end. I think "IF" the Marlins want to trade for Beltran now it will cost them a Castillo/ Cabrera to make it happen. Later it will cost alot too but they might take other opitions.

*Red Sox OF Trot Nixon, Unless the Red Sox take pitching prospects for Trot I don't see us making this trade unless they overpay BIGTIME to get a Penny later "IF" out of the race.

*D-Ray OF A. Huff, I would love to see this former cane in teal :D I don't think he's really OF and would cost alot to get.

*Pirates Brian Giles, This week the Dodgers made a serious run at Giles by offering Odalis Perez..guess what? the Pirates wanted two top prospects and Perez. Now what do think they'd want from the fish? Beckett, Stokes and Denny Bautista would do...NO WAY, will pass next

*Padres Rondell White, The Marlins a month ago came close to pull the trigger until Cabrera was brought up. How's about now? the same price is on the table Ramon Castro, Abe Nunez and Hollandsworth. Whould you do it? :mischief2

*Mets J.Burnitz, The guy is really on fire but his salary $$$ is way to big and the Mets will pay the salary but want the $$$ back by the start of next season by various reports.Oh ya they want top talent in return like Stokes and Bautista.

Here are a few names the Marlins would probable take a look at or you could always stay with what you have...or look within like OF Abe Nunez who is hitting .370 in AAA as a switch hitter.

*side note today is the future game at 5:30pm on ESPN2

Marlins RHP Denny Bautista will pitch for the world team.

Bring Aubrey Huff! Cane power! And I think he might be one of the cheaper of the players there, since the DRays earlly have no hope for anything and could sell him off for a couple of prospects.

Huff is being made available????

Actually, I think the only position that needs an upgrade offensively is LF. That kinda narrows the search. I mean, I don't think you're going to get anyone in a trade that will upgrade over the guys we have at other starting positions.

Hey Ed do you think Frank Catallanatto is available now that the Blue Jays are falling out of the race?

I can't believe Aubrey Huff is available that doesn't make any sense.

well Willis has a 8-3 lead so it was good idea to start willis

i dont think we would need to get a big bat to start over cabrera at LF. what we need is a badass pinch hitter like maybe a john vander wal or something like that.

because the fox/mordecai hitting tandem doesnt work out too much, i dunno thats just my thought

but hollandsworth of the bench as a pinch hitter is great, i think we need a right hander

I guess they touch up Willis putting up 3 runs :D BUT if the offense hadn't come through like what happen in Willis last two starts he'd be on the losing end right now. They did get him out of the game in 5IN.

farmer_fran, Frank Catallanatto could be able later but I think they(Marlins) would want a power hitter in that spot. I do know that Shannon Stewart(free agent at season end) is on the block but again not much power.

As far as Huff, everbody is on the block expect Baldelli, Crawford, and Zambrano. I would think Huff would get alot in return as far as pitching for the Rays.

Ed, I was surprised you mentioned neither Jeff Conine nor Juan Gonzalez. By every account both are available. JuanGon has been on a tear the last two weeks.

As for Abraham Nunez, I'm sure you remember he failed miserably last Sept after being called up. If memory serves, he had what can only be considered a mediocre year at Calgary in 2002 as well. The fact that in a few at bats he is doing well for the 'Topes is encouraging, but frankly he's no BIG BAT now, and not in the furseeable (2003) season. I certainly would never mortgage the season on Nunez's bat if I were serious about contending for the wildcard.

That said, good post with a little somethng for everyone to discuss.

ok if juan gone is a free agent after next season and the ranger are willing to pay most of his salary like they did with urbina he would be great. i dont think he would mind jumping from a crappy team to a playoff contender

i read on espn that he fired his former agent and hired a new one and has somewhat convinced him to think of a the thought of a trade

I didn't metion OF Juan Gonzalez because A, he doesn't want a trade to NL team, B I don't want the Marlins dealing with John Hart after seeing what they got from the Marlins for Urbina. Jeff Conine is too old to play the OF and DLee is heating up.

no he isn't

yeah, he is

Nope...he doesn't have enough service time. If he would have spent the whole 98 season in the bigs he would be a FA(98,99,00,01,02,03..6 years) but at the end of the year he will be at 5+ years and will be eligible for arbitration.

''Recently, Gammons predicted the offseason arbitration figures for several players, including Carlos Beltran, who makes $6 million in this his second year of arbitration. Gammons predicted that an arbitrator would award Beltran with $11 million for the 2004 season.''

Hey Ed if the Twins keep on falling back do you think they will be looking to unload? I think they're 8 games behind the royals now.
