Marlins' Hagerty knows about Rule 5 now

JUPITER -- He had nothing to worry about. That's what people told Luke Hagerty regarding the Rule 5 Draft.

Less than two years removed from Tommy John surgery and with 14 games of pro experience, he wasn't a good enough risk. The Marlins thought differently.

They arranged for the Orioles to select Hagerty from the Cubs in the December Rule 5 Draft and acquired him via trade. If Hagerty does not spend the entire season on the 25-man roster, the Marlins would have to offer him back to the Cubs for half of the $50,000 selection price.

Should the Cubs not want him back, Hagerty would have to clear waivers before the Marlins could demote him. The 6-foot-7 Hagerty hopes it won't come to that. He is on a short list of candidates for the second lefty spot in the bullpen.

Equipped with a mid-90s fastball to go with a slider and changeup, Hagerty lacks only experience.

He made 10 starts for Class A Boise after the Cubs drafted him in the first round (32nd overall) out of Ball State in 2002.

The next spring he blew out his elbow and last season totaled nine innings over four appearances.

"I'm so excited to be back on the mound again I have to keep telling myself to relax and not burn myself out," said Hagerty, who didn't pay much attention to Rule 5 happenings. "Everybody I talked to said there was no way [to be picked]. I didn't even know it was going on that day. I was working out. When I came out, there were like 13 messages on my phone."

Hagerty added 12 miles an hour to his fastball from high school to the end of his sophomore year at Ball State. He improved his bottom-half mechanics and filled out his frame to become one of top pro pitching prospects of 2002.

"The thing that makes Hagerty interesting is he's left-handed," manager Jack McKeon said. "He's been out of college, had the injury. He's come back and been throwing good. A lot of these college guys can jump right into the big leagues."

I read this over on FloridaMarlins.com. Hopefully it all works out and turns out to be a great pick up.

So I guess it is safe to say, barring a horrendous spring he will be on the opening day roster eh?

unfortunately it could be the other way around...

unless he has a tremendous spring, he might be outta here

Whers the room on the Pen?

1) Mota

2)Alfonseca

3)Spooney

4)Reidling

5)Jones

6)Mecir

7)Perisho

Possible that Spooney wont be ready to start the season and will be pitching in minors for a bit.

When he comes back though, Hagerty might be the odd man out unless fatso Perisho struggles and Hagerty excels.

With Perisho showing up 125 pounds too heavy, I would have to think Hagerty has jumped into the lead for the lefty spot in the pen.

He could start the season on the DL, yet remain in the 40 man roster.

And with the way Perisho entered camp, he may have a much better shot at landing a spot in the BP.

Spooney'll go to AAA to sort things out to start, and the versatility given by having Conine/Encarnacion/Easley lets us carry 12 pitchers.

Encarnacion - versatile? Because he can the three outfield positions?

693307[/snapback]

Well, yeah, and between Easley and Conine we have every infield position covered aside from catcher which Treanor/DiFelice will take care of.

With the exception of Delgado last year, our position players (knock on wood) have all had a track record of solid health (freak injuries aside). Having all positions covered (catcher excluded) between three players does help with depth.

Do I want to carry 12 pitchers as an NL team? Not really, but I think we have to try to hold on to Hagerty (I mean, he instantly becomes one of our top-10 prospects). If keeping Hagerty jeopardizes our chances of winning, I'll be the first to say we need to put him through waivers, but as of right now, let's see what he's got because that last spot on the bench might as well be used to try to help the franchise now and for the future.

Heh.

Hagerty needs to spend 90 days on the 25-man active roster (and no das in the minor leagues, save rehab starts) for the Marlins to retain his rights for next year.

Thought this thread was about that movie with the scrawny kid who was a loner and almost dies when he drops the football.

If it's only 90 days, that takes us into July which isn't a big deal (because for all you Moneyball heads, you spend that long trying to decide on your team, at the deadline in July, you get the team you want). If Josias Manzanillo could spend a half-season with us (as bad as he was) Hagerty could find a way.

Besides, it's not as if he'd be blocking someone who is begging for a bench spot. I mean, why start someone's arbitration clock early by making him sit on the bench instead of playing in AA/AAA.

Hey, Manzy was okay. Maybe you're thinking of Billy Koch. The guy who the Marlins got for the player who beat Lenny Harris' butt for the last roster shot but was sent back to Albuquerque.

Also re: arbitration clocks. They only run while a player is on the major league roster (active or injured). Bring a kid up too early, such as Kensing, only effects his option clock. By the end of three years he can not be sent to the minors without being exposed to waivers.

Lots of Rule 5's have spent a good portion of a season on the DL. With Hagerty's history of arm trouble he could be hid for most of the year.

Yeah, didn't Billy Beane keep Mike Neu on the A's roster two seasons ago?...what a star he turned out to be.
