Leiter Opening Day

Featured Replies

How about Al Leiter Opening Day? It's a long season and that would be an appropriate tip of the hat to a veteran Marlin.

The rotation matters, not who threw out the first pitch.

1. Al Leiter (LHP)

2. A.J. Burnett (RHP)

3. Dontrelle Willis (LHP)

4. Josh Beckett (RHP)

5. Ismael Valdez (or a Spring Training Surprise)

I wouldn't mind it, but I think it should go:

1. Leiter

2. Burnett

3. Beckett

4. Willis

5. Ish

Beckett could get a ton of wins as the #3 guy. Much like Pavano last year.

We should really hope for the spring training surprise. While Valdez could benefit from being infront of the Marlin defense, the Marlin offense has little to gain from him being on the mound every fifth day.

Great lets have our opening day starter go 5 innings. Nothing like using your bullpen for 4 innings to cap the year off.

I have no problem with the bull-pen finishing a Leiter Opening Day Start.

They're supposed to do that.

And they can.

You expect your Opening Day Starter to go nine innings?

Maybe we could get Logan Kensing as our 5th starter to go for a solid 2 innings a game.

When opening day happens to be against the team you are fighting for the division crown with and will be all year, and they won the division the last decade or so, you might want to start with a win. And our bullpen is not exactly Philadelphia-esque here.

I believe the Marlins season ended after they just got pummeled by the Bravos the first month of last year. The Marlins were hot and then went on to lose about 5 of 6 to the Braves right? In about a 2 week span. I know we got swept in Atlanta. We might want to start the year with a statement.

Aj for 8 innings is better than Al and the Florida Marlins circus of freaks aka the bullpen.

The one-armed bandit.

The six finger dragon slayer.

The melancholy no-neck.

One guy who had elbow surgery about 3 months ago.

Anotehr guy who hasn't pitched in an MLB game in about 2 years.

A couple journeying aging gnomes.

And a setup man that won't set up anybody.

Rooting for someone is one thing. Pointing out their physical short comings are another. I think most people would agree we could tour our bullpen in the offseason for extra revenue. :plain

And as far as I am concerned: Jones, Alfo, Bentz, Haggerty, Reidling, Delgado, Al, Mota, are not Marlins yet, at least in Al and Alfo's case this generation of Fish yet. Gotta show me something. Just because you have the name on the front of the jersey doesn't mean you're a Fish yet.

I hated Choi before he suited up. He showed me something. I was po'ed to see him go.

If you take the extra fat around perisho's neck and stomach and alfo's extra finger you nearly have a second arm for bentz.

Let's hope so. But not be too stupid to believe it will actually happen. McKeon and the Marlins should try to avoid playing their lesser players such as Valdes as often as possible. Take advantage of those off-days.

Pointing their physical shortcomings is calling them a "circus of freaks"? ok, whatever rocks your boat

Have you seen the claw lately?

Or the 6th finger?

maybe you should check the meaning of your words before you use it for your messageboard name calling.

I think AJ needs to be the starter, but whoever has the best spring should get the spot

I just had deja-vous (or however you spell it). I think there was a topic like this yesterday.

But I think Josh should and will start--he has the best stuff on the staff, and he has a great attitude toward the game. How many times can you get a blister on your finger and be able to keep up your morale like that cocky bastard always does.

I don't like AJ--don't care for him at all. I hope he does well this season, but his future plans are unimportant to me. Leiter is a great guy. You can't dislike the guy. He's fun, nice, and he gets the job done. I think he'll be our number two guy (unless Dontrelle smokes everyone in ST).

Remember, the rotation is going to be R L R L R...So Beckett and Burnett will not be back to back.

Gotta think it's going to be Beckett.

He was the opening day pitcher last year-- a game the Fish won.

Why tinker with it?

i like that rotation, but i have to agree with fritz on this one. it should go like this- Leiter, the veteran Marlin,Burnett, Beckett and then Willis, and Ismael. Beckett can be most like Pavs this season. He can lead the team with wins and be like he was 03. I hope for the spring training surprise. Ish is good, but id like to see whats out there.

Good response. Apparently you are saying okay to Leiter Opening Day?

Welcome to the minority. Tradition and respect counts. And what an easy way to settle the Burnett/Beckett ego-battle.

Wow.. that PhishPhan is a first class a-hole, eh??

I would love to see Leiter on Opening Day. He's one of my favorite all time Marlin pitchers. Not only cause he's a nice guy, but he put up some good numbers when he was with us his first time around. I think he'll be great once again this season. His home park is pitcher friendly and he's got much better defense than he's had the past 7 years.

I agree that Beckett would really benefit from pitching in the 3 hole... He wouldn't be facing all the aces (at least for the first month or so). If he stays healthy, he can rack up a bunch of wins. My rotation would go...

Leiter

Burnett

Becket

Willis

Valdez

I know that doesn't give us the lefty/righty thing all the way down, but I think that's overrated anyways.

I think you make great points...But I do think the lefty/right rotation is a plus. In a 3-game series, you can use it to your advantage. That might make some teams substitute players to accomodate for the pitching matchup.
